drodriguez Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I am a western Washington native, moved to Oregon, got married, that didn't work, now I'm back in WA and am facing a life altering decision. Should I move to North Carolina. My old man just moved there, and is offering me a place to stay and a job transfer. Family in WA is a mess, my support me, and the bassin' in nc is supposed to be better than Western WA by a mile. Would you do it if you were in the position I am? Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 What part of NC? I lived in Brunswick county for nearly ten years loved it. Quote
DirtyDeuceGoose Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I live in Onslow county. Can't say I would recommend it but everywhere else I've been in the state has been great. And three big lakes are only about 2 hours away Quote

It would be helpful if you could let us know what area you're looking at. NC is a very diverse state culturally, economically and geographically. 1 Quote
drodriguez Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 Probably Mount Hood, which is 15 to 20 minutes from Charolette. Quote
Super User clayton86 Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 Make the move sounds like ya got nothing to loose. Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 The Charlotte metro area is huge, especially compared to thirty years ago. It encompasses all of Mecklenburg county and then some. As far as fitting in its a great place, more transplants than natives. Allot to do and see, go for it. You can always move back if ya don't like it. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 1, 2014 Global Moderator Posted December 1, 2014 I'd make the move and take the chance at a fresh start. The weather alone would be enough to make me move. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted December 1, 2014 Super User Posted December 1, 2014 as a longtime NC resident first in Western NC and then in Charlotte from '02-'13 i would say that's a tough decision. i LOVE NC, but man what i wouldn't give to live out West. i say figure out a way to spend 2 solid weeks with your old man and try it out. i now live in Atlanta and what i wouldn't give to be back in Charlotte........ drodriguez Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 Thanks all. Life's a risk anyway, right? What would and should I be prepared for with the people? I am white and Hispanic, and I'm not from the south. This is enough to be labeled a "northerner" regardless of the fact that WA wasn't a state durring the civil war. Whats the whether like there? Rain snow? Major disasters to worry about? Lol Quote
drodriguez Posted December 2, 2014 Author Posted December 2, 2014 More importantly, what is the price of living there? I'm making 10 an hour, will be paid the same with more reliable hours if I chose to make the move. I can't afford things here. Lookin at 1000 a month for an apartment, and it only goes up from there. Rain snow? Major disasters to worry about? Lol Precisely why I asked where you were wanting to move. You'll be in a very accepting part of the state, as many transplanted people as there are natives. You're not far enough west in the state to be in the mountains, apparently us mountain folk are the same everywhere deep distrust of outsiders. This will not be such a big deal in the Charlotte area. Weather is very mild, if u see a snowflake it will be rare, plus you get to laugh at the locals, there will be a run on the grocery stores, apparently snow is the major sign of the apocalypse here, Google a cost of living calculator, there u can compare the cost of living by zipcode, but in general it is low, compared to any mountain area, gas here in SC is $2.43 a gallon. The economy there is in decent shape, you may find a better paying job. Like I said earlier allot to do, friendly ppl, great climate, cost of living isn't bad. PS Where is Mount Hood? Thought that was in Oregon?? Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted December 2, 2014 Super User Posted December 2, 2014 retiredbosn is right on. weather is great (hot and humid in the dead of summer though, but that's the south). people will be as accepting as anywhere you will find in the southeast as there are truly a lot of transplants in the charlotte area. cost of living is somewhat low compared to other metro areas (especially compared to Atlanta). If those are the only things holding you back, then go ahead and make the move. you won't regret it. best part of charlotte is you are 3-4 hours from the sweet@ss mountains in western NC and if the beach is your scene, you can be there within 4 hours. great place to live, great place to raise a family. Matthew2000 Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 Move here I'm like 30 minuets from there there are some Great Lakes around here. Norman especially, we love it here there's lots of tourneys here if your into that. Also were getting a cabelas very soon. Cost of living is low as there are a lot of new developments and apartments going up all the time. Fly out here for a week or 2 and see how you like it . Then decide if you people are friendly and the BBQ quite amazing. Also school systems are not all that great unless you move just south into York county in South Carolina if your looking to start a family consider that. I live in lake Wylie there is basically no crime except for little things. There was 1 double homicide here this year that's it. We're would you be working ? I can recommend some Better areas and some not so great ones. Quote
drodriguez Posted December 4, 2014 Author Posted December 4, 2014 I can't say where I'll be working but I can say it will be with the same company I am currently employed with. The pay isn't the greatest at 10 an hour, especially in Washington. Figures, highest minimum wage in the lower 48. I'd like to find something in the 15 dollar range, as the company I'm working for may not exist in the future in NC. Mount Holly is about 15 minutes from charolette from what my old man is telling me. Sorry for the typo. Spell check... Quote
jitterbug127 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 North carolina is gorgeous. My favorite state for sure. I have a nc nursing license just incase i want to move lol. Quote
Matthew2000 Posted December 4, 2014 Posted December 4, 2014 Mt.holly is nice your in gaston county then, it's about 15-20 minuets from Charlotte. Do you own a boat ? Quote
drodriguez Posted December 5, 2014 Author Posted December 5, 2014 I do, but it would have to stay behind. Why? Quote
Matthew2000 Posted December 5, 2014 Posted December 5, 2014 Well mountain island lake is 5 minuets from mount holly. It was just a thought I know there's not many places to bank fish in mount holly area as far as ponds and lake access Quote
drodriguez Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 I'll be getting into clubs and learning to fish as a backseater. The boat I have isn't a bass boat anyway. Its nowhere near sturdy enough. What crainkbaits should I be looking at investing in? Colors etc? Ive never even seen a spot, let alone fish for them. Quote
Matthew2000 Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Mt. Island use jigs, and square bills there are a lot of small fish up river but if you go fish docks you might get lucky with something bigger. Colors, shad colors and craw, I got a lot of hits on spro cranks. And if you fish Wylie in summer all I can say is good luck it's quite the challenge. Spots are easy you can throw whatever for them. I would recommend Norman most for spots there some nice fish in there Quote
drodriguez Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 What exactly is a small fish? Here in WA and OR its commonplace for the minimum size to be 10" to 12" in tournaments. Bass just don't get large in numbers here, as we don't have a lot of forage species for them. What size bag wins tournaments there? I've seen 7 pound bags win in OR. And if I were to invest in a technique specific rod and real combo, what would you recommend? Quote
Matthew2000 Posted December 7, 2014 Posted December 7, 2014 Just pick up three rods really a square bill, a Texas rig and jig, and a spinning rod. Flukes work well here too. Most tournaments have a 14" and above rule. And as far as company's check out denali rods and lews reels both are 100 a piece. And if/when you move here take a drive to lake Wylie and hog to hunt fish paddle. Ask the guys there what to use Quote
Super User retiredbosn Posted December 7, 2014 Super User Posted December 7, 2014 hog to hunt fish paddle. What??? Quote
