rchiuz Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Hi all, I have a Shiamno Citica (left hand) that I don't use as much so I thought I might as well try to learn how to open it to clean and relube. I found this video on youtube from Shimano which is very helpful http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLpO74dWuoE. After putting the reel back together, I noticed the spool is always free to move. For those of you that are pretty good at this, where should I look for the problem? Thanks in advance! Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 29, 2014 Super User Posted November 29, 2014 . After putting the reel back together, I noticed the spool is always free to move. If you can give a little more detail about this, I may be able to help you. Quote
hatrix Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 The drag is not tight enough probably. When putting reels back together you can hold the level wind so you can tighten up the drag without it fully assembled. 1 Quote
rchiuz Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 The drag washers where the handle is? Quote
rchiuz Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 If you can give a little more detail about this, I may be able to help you. Even when the lock is engaged, the spool can still turn. If I pull on the line and try to reel, its like free spool. can't reel in the line. Quote

Super User HoosierHawgs Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 Wipe dirty areas clean w/a cotton swab dipped in rubbing alcohol (it dries fast). Then lubricate the handle knobs, worm gear, levelwind, and drag star. You can flush the bearings if you like, but I find moisture to be more of a problem than a help. This is how my dad and I serviced all are reels, and I am still using a Shimano Bantum Magnumlite that was serviced this way for 30 years. Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 Is the handle moving back? You are sure its not the anti reverse? Quote
rchiuz Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 I got it, I had the drag super loose. Well, at least I got a lot of practice opening it up LOL Do you clean the worm gear as well and how do you go about it without getting more stuff in there? Quote

Sweet, good thing the anti reverse wasn't blown! I just wipe everything I can w/the swab. I don't worry about it too much. If you do this it should be fine. Also, w/the drag, I've had a similar problem, accidentally backing it off, and not having enough torque to pull my spinnerbait. Freaked me out! Quote
rchiuz Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 How often do people open up the gear side to relube and clean? Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 How often do people open up the gear side to relube and clean? Annually is a good practice if your reel is used regularly. If it is exposed to harsher elements or used quite heavily then more often may be appropriate. Quote
rchiuz Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 I know Dink mentioned it before but is the norm to the bearings alone or those cleaned as well? I just wonder because of people switching the factory bearing for the Bocas Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 A typical annual cleaning would include complete disassembly, inspection, repair /replacement of any necessary parts. While disassembled all bearings would be properly flushed and checked for serviceability. Once everything is clean and determined to be serviceable you would properly oil and grease all parts as necessary and reassemble. 1 Quote
rchiuz Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 Thanks all. I think I will just do basic cleanings and just leave it to a professional for an annuals. Just took me too long lol Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 That's a good plan. A true frame off deep cleaning takes the better part of 2 hours, maybe more if you're inexperienced. In between, a drop of oil on each spool bearing every 4-6 trips or so, keeping debris off the level wind and periodically pulling the spool and using a swab to clean the frame, spool and if present the centrifugal brake drum you'll be in great shape.
