acmintun Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I know a lot of people aren't fans of black Friday with crowds, or they dislike what capitalism can drive people to do. We've all seen the crazy videos of people getting trampled and spending time away from there family for the sake of a good deal. I just wanted to say that I personally look forward to black Friday. I'm a young father of two little boys who are my first priority, but fishing is the one thing I get to do that let's me get away from the everyday stresses. I work between 50 and 60 hours a week, and I work third shift at that, but I get off just in time to get to the lake to meet a friend and hop on their boat. The lack of sleep is definitely worth it. Back to my main point. I look forward to black Friday because it's the one time of year that I can stretch my tiny budget and fill up the tackle bag. Just wondering what you all think. Quote

The places that we go aren't near as bad as a typical best buy or target. But BPS is being smart about it. Spread it out among 5 days. Which is a good idea for the rest. Like a week after thanksgiving sale. That'd get rid of some of the havoc i would think. But either way, there is no shame in liking black Friday. I can't stand going in the mall with my woman because i know im just a tagalong. And she can't stand going to bass pro with me. Because even if im not buying anything, we're in there for a minimum of 3 hours lol. 1 Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted November 29, 2014 Super User Posted November 29, 2014 I love black Friday when I can sit on my computer and buy stuff, going to stores like best buy or walmart.... Not so much. Quote
acmintun Posted November 29, 2014 Author Posted November 29, 2014 I did go to bass pro to look around and see if I liked anything. It was ridiculously packed. There were bins of flannel pajama pants in big bins for like $5. If you have ever seen a zombie movie or show, and someone goes down and they are swarmed and piled on....it was exactly like that Quote
ColdSVT Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 You mention your boys as your first priority yet you stock up on fishing tackle for yourself in black friday...interesting For the record i hate black friday too but for the reasons you do...i just dislike people lol Quote

My fishing budget was after getting my family gifts and basics, diapers clothes etc, and a couple nice things for the old lady. So quick to judge yet sooooooo far from reality. brgbassmaster Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Not this guy. I just shop online if anything. Actually just bought 6 powell rods online for black friday. Quote
bass1980 Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I love black friday. There's no point of standing in line if you're not after that super sized TV or Tickle me Elmo. I just wait for TW and BTD to go at it with their sales. It's winter here and its the off season. This is where I stock up for next season. I just dropped $150 on plastics! Another $50 on terminal tackle and junk. I wish black friday comes 2 times a year lol. Quote
RSM789 Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I like Black Friday for a different reason. While others are up early fighting crowds for deals, I have the lake all to myself. Not only no other fishermen, but no pleasure boaters either. Yesterday was a beautiful day here in So Cal, high of 78 degrees and just an occasional touch of wind on an otherwise calm day & I was like the Omega man out on the water. 1 Quote
Missourifishin Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I shop online. I like to go in Bass Pro on a normal day and just wander around. But dealing with crowds on black Friday, nah. I actually didn't get any gear on black Friday this year. I got a deal on a Lews reel a couple weeks ago that was just as good as a black Friday deal. So my remaining money is going to a tv. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 30, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 30, 2014 I like black Friday because it keeps that many more people off the water if I get the chance to fish  I've never been shopping on black Friday and if I have it my way, I never will. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 The enticement of sale merchandise is not reason alone to make me go to a store. Â If I need or want something the crowd is not a deterrent for me. 1 Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 Black Friday isn't a bad thing. Â Time to start spending money for Christmas, some deals to be had as well. Normal people out looking to make their money stretch a bit farther with sale items. Â Now lining up days before, rushing in to buy that cheap 52" flatscreen tv, full contact Thursday "Midnight Fistfight" sale for those special sub par sale items they only sell for that time and never stock otherwise. Â No thank you, I'll wait till Monday when they are done and most are back to work to start my shopping that must be done in the stores and not online. Â Quote
BassThumbAddict Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I went to bass pro this year to look at fishing deals. Ended up getting 3 pairs of jeans couple a shirts and a hoodie. I didn't think the one here in oklahoma city was to crowded. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 I dread BF if there's something I want on sale and it is only available during specific hours. Typically, the dread is the fact I won't be getting that item, LOL!!  I was happy this year that BF sales were stretched out over 5 days or so. I got the one item I wanted at BPS on Wed. before ThanksGiving.  This year's BF seemed anticlimactic to me. I saw deals everywhere that simply were items on regular sales, or slightly more discounted. Not a lot of gotta have it stuff on our lists.  The Carbonlite I bought will be discounted again at the Spring Classic, for likely the same $$ as it was at BF, and the Classic the year before. So I grabbed it.  No TW or such for me. I stocked up on my worms and such during other sales this fall which were NOT offered on BF. Quote
Super User BassinLou Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 I love BF, but for reasons others have mentioned. It's a perfect day to be out on the water. I have been doing just that for 14 yrs. If people want to go out in the wee hours of the morning and deal with large crowds so be it. That is their choice. Me on the other hand.... I will stick with my BF tradition. Just like Catch and Grease mentioned that's what computers are for. Quote
BassmanDan Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I have never shopped on BF or Thanksgiving until this year...there was an incredible deal on a Samsung TV that was only going on in stores and limited quantities. I waited until about 10pm Thanksgiving night and was lucky to get one of the last ones in stock, and the crowds were not bad at all. I never would have been able to pay full price for it and watching FLW on it right now is almost an out of body experience lol.  I would have much rather been on the water, but that wasn't an option for me anyway this year. acmintun Posted November 30, 2014 Author Posted November 30, 2014 I was watching the news on thanksgiving night and they were doing a story on how the shops were opening up on thanksgiving etc etc.....and they had a camera crew at the mall and they were interviewing a lady who said, "I think the stores opening up on Thanksgiving is ridiculous, everyone should be at home spending time with their families." Meanwhile she had armfuls of shopping bags Quote
Rhino68W Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I was in line at Best Buy all day on Thanksgiving in order to get a certain 50'' tv for $200. I got one, and the next day it warmed up quite a bit! I was rewarded for my valiant efforts with a full days fishing when I thought I was done for the year. However, the hardest part was watching the line at DSG get bigger and bigger across the street. Made me jealous Quote

So rarely does a person explain how his kids are his main priority and then follow up i "bought myself something"You dont have to explain yourself either, im sure youre a fine father. Since we are in that subject wait till you start rationalizing why your four year old needs a certain rod or reel...oh its bad lol 1 Quote

Just wondering what you all think.  Dragging this thread back (kicking and screaming) to the original point. What do I think?  If you stay within your budget, regardless of its size, then enjoy.  Too many times though, I've seen people go way overboard trying to make sure that every relative gets buried in gifts that they didn't even know they wanted until it was showered on them. Reason seems to fly out the window, and you can witness it's victims if you'll drive by your local payday loan store this week. It is their busiest season of the entire year.  The second mad rush is when all those gifts get returned. Most likely turned into cash to pay for their own extravagance.  The last mad rush comes at the end of January through the first week of February. These are the same folks who flock to the quickest ( and not necessarily the best ) tax preparer's office in dire need of a rapid refund. Having not paid their utility bills for two months to insure the perfect Christmas, they NEED that money NOW.  But like I said, if you stay within your budget and actually enjoy the craziness of the crowds, Enjoy! 1 Quote
