okbassguy Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 How do the abu garcia revo SX or stx perform and how is the casting Quote
JeziHogg Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Gen 3 Revo's have terrible quality control. If you're lucky enough to get one that isn't trash they're decent reels. Quote

Ozark_Basser Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I own both. Never had a problem with either. I've owned the previous generations as well. Never had a problem. I guess I'm lucky. Casting is kind of up to you, but with 50 lb braid with all the breaks turned off except one on the centrifugal brake (STX only) on a 7 foot MH I can bomb a frog .....too far. Quote
ChrisWi Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 They are okay reels, they feel cheap in your hands though, feel kinda geary, I've heard a lot of bad reviews, I'd say tSat there are better reels in that price range (Lews Tournament Lite) Quote
travis23 Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I own 3 sx and i like them. My 7:1 is a dud though starting to have problems (1 yr old). Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 30, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 30, 2014 I had a 7.1 SX that I couldn't cast to save my live without backlashing. I think it was a Gen 1 or 2 though. It pitched decent but after doing that for a while the insert in the reel line guide popped out and I had to return it. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 I have had all of the Revos ( S, SX, STX) from all three generations. IMHO unless you "just want one" they are kind of a waste of money. The Orra's are just as good (although limited in LH options), for less money. I never had any problems with them, but they also never "wowed" me. Especially when cheaper reels like the Orra's and Daiwa Excelers perform just as well. Yeah the gen3 STX has eva knobs...............whoopdee doo. Quote

I currently own the STX, this reel has also treated me well, but i will have to agree it is very geary. Even after it was fully serviced the geary sound and feeling still remains. It does not effect performance, but compared to Lews and Shimano's which i also own, the Stx ranks below them. Lews and Shimano's operate smoother and much quieter. Quote

Hattrick7 Posted December 1, 2014 Posted December 1, 2014 Have a gen 3 sx and so far so good after a good year half of almost daily use. No problems casting. Great workhorse reel. Only complaint is that I've grown more accustomed to the longer handle if my tatula. Other than that been a great reel so far. This was my first BC and had minimal issues with backlashes. Brake settings are key on this reel. Quote

Castability is good, line mgmt is good, brake settings were never a problem if you adjust to the baits accordingly. My one and only complaint is the geary sound the reel posseses. If you can get past that, the reel will treat you well. Quote
Super User CWB Posted December 2, 2014 Super User Posted December 2, 2014 Have an STX that is about 7 or 8 years old. Very smooth, well built, long casting reel. Still using it. Can't speak to the newer versions. Quote
Hattrick7 Posted December 2, 2014 Posted December 2, 2014 in my opinion the breaks are a PITA, getting a good setting for baits 3/16 - 1/4 is a pain Never had a problem throwing plastics weight less unless it's really super light and there's wind. I normally don't throw weightless trigs but the times I have never had an issue. I usually keep my brakes around 5 or 6. With the wind to 8 or so. Spool tension is pretty loose. Don't even bother adjusting to different baits anymore. Quote

*Hank Posted December 3, 2014 Posted December 3, 2014 I wouldn't mess with around with abu Garcia theres alot of other better reels in the price range. Tryed em didn't like em! Quote

I only paid 130 on eBay for a brand new one but with tatulas going for 100 on amazon that's pretty tough to beat. Quote
