I need a spinner bait rod, and am stuck between a medium heavy or a medium? What are your thoughts?

Also should I go casting, or spinning, I see advantages to both what so you guys think on this as well

Casting. As for power, go w/the lightest one you think you can set the hook with. The lighter rod will not tire you out as much. I throw spinnerbaits on a ST Croix MH Triumph because I traded an old Shimano Fightin' Rod for it.

Depends on what size spinnerbaits you throw.  For 1/4 and 3/8oz. a medium will be fine. If you throw much 1/2oz. or more I'd go with the MH.. And casting... I really like the Loomis SBR  812 .it's a 6ft 9,  medium,  xfast.. It's good for the majority of my spinnerbait fishing. For the 1/4 oz  war eagle I use a TWR  802.

I use 3 different rods for the different spinnerbaits that I throw.  For the 1/4 and some 3/8 a 6.6' MH, the 3/8 with larger trailers and the 1/2 oz a 7' MH and for the 3/4 and 1 oz 7' H.  I'd never feel comfortable with a M and a spinnerbait.

I'm with Jig Man on this, in fact I do almost the exact same thing only I don't use a heavy power rod as I don't use spinnerbaits over 3/4oz. 6'6" MH-F for the 1/4oz and for 3/8oz with willow blades, 7'MH-F for 3/8oz with any other blades other than willows and then that rod will also work for all the other blades I use.

I use a heavy powered rod most of the time (champ 734). However, this is because it is a versatile rod originally designed for big spooks and as such has enough of a tip and bend to compensate for its heavy power.

How much money do you want to spend?  The St Croix Mojo Bass Spinnerbait rod is a good choice.  7ft MH/F Casting rod.  I really like it and I am sure the higher end models that St Croix makes are even better.

i use a medium heavy with extra fast tip. I don't throw spinnerbaits over 3/8 ounce though.

7'MH Casting Rod with some tip to it.  Spinnerbait fishing to me is all about making a bunch of roll casts with extreme accuracy.  A good soft tip makes roll casts easier and allows the spinnerbait to enter the water quietly.  Anything over 7' is just too long for the way i throw a spinnerbait.

I have a 6'6" Medium Bass Pro Extreme Rod that I LOVE for spinnerbaits. its about 10 years old now but I could throw it all day.  Its by far one of my favorite rods because it feels so right with the spinnerbaits.  I don't fish anything over 1/2 oz on it, mostly throwing 1/4 or 3/8 oz.. And to add to what you were asking, I go baitcaster for spinnerbaits. Infact, the 5lb Smallie in my profile picture was caught on that rod.

All rod ratings are subjective, but in this case I'd look more at the lure weight rating. Let cover dictate the power.  A fast action like you'd use on a worm or jig rod works well. I prefer casting for all but the smallest spinners.

I have two spinner bait rods a 783 loomis imx and a 6'6mf daiwa Procyon. They have the same lure weights 1/4-3/4 and feel similar. Who would have thought? I only use 3/8oz spinnerbaits with and without 3 inch grub trailer.

I only use casting for spinnerbaits and I use a MH/F a majority of the time.

I like a MH around any sort of cover and a M in Open water, both are casting rods
