mperrine Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 Hi, A friend of a friend has an Abu Garcia Revo STX generation 1 reel for sale for $60. As for as condition goes id rate its as very good, just some minor scuffs/scratches. Do you guys think this would be a good deal? Quote
mperrine Posted November 28, 2014 Author Posted November 28, 2014 Hows the mechanical condition though? I really couldn't tell you for sure other than my friend said it works good when I asked if there was anything wrong with it. Ive just seen a picture of it on my friends phone. Quote
Super User Jeff H Posted November 28, 2014 Super User Posted November 28, 2014 I think so, That was a $200 reel new if I recall. I had gen 1 SX's and they were great performers for me. My son has a gen 1 STX and never had a problem with it yet. $60 is a good deal as long as there are no mechanical issues. Quote
DirtyDeuceGoose Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 My gen 1 STX was an absolute workhorse. If there's nothing wrong with it I would ****** it up if I were you. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 I think that is a great deal if the mechanical condition is pretty spot on. Buy it. See how it fishes. Take it to get cleaned if you have to. Quote
Grantman83 Posted November 28, 2014 Posted November 28, 2014 The only negative I rememeber from the first generation was the braking system being hard to control. They fixed it for generation 2 1 Quote
Super User deep Posted November 28, 2014 Super User Posted November 28, 2014 All I remember about that reel is I couldn't cast it to save my life. Other than that, it was a nice reel; super smooth, consistent drag etc etc. TW was blowing them out for ~$100 back in 2010. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted November 28, 2014 Super User Posted November 28, 2014 The generation 2 reels were much better, and being that reel has some age to it, I think $60 is a bit much. The only way I would do it is if I know for sure the reel was maintained, the reason why is that by the time a reel hits 5 years old, if it wasn't cleaned and lubricated properly there will be uneven wear in the gears and it will be hard to tell by just reeling it but under load you will notice the slight "grind" you get for lack of a better term. If it was a generation 2 I'd say yes, that is a good deal and could be if it was maintained but if it were maintained properly, I'd be willing to be he'd be asking more for it so you are getting a reel that most likely has been used to the point that it doesn't have a lot of life left in it. Remember, this is pure speculation, but ask how often it was lubed and cleaned and ask what was used or who did the maintenance and if they tell you that they don't remember or don't know what kind of lube they used, stay away from it. mperrine Posted December 6, 2014 Author Posted December 6, 2014 Well I ended up buying it for $55.Seems to be in pretty good shape.I've messed around with it alittle and there isn't anything obvious wrong with it that I can tell, but I'm far from an expert.I guess I won't know for sure until I take it fishing. For what its worth, I did ask if he did any regular maintenance on it and he said once a year he took it apart and cleaned it and used Reel Butter oil and grease on it Thanks again for all of the information.
