jakeerickson Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 I would like to design my own bass jig and im wondering how i would create a custom mold? Quote
Catch 22 Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 Order a blank mold from Do It Mold Co. Or buy some 1/2" plate from Ebay to work with . Its fairly cheap and some sellers will cut to size. Buy a Dremel tool to carve and shape your idea. C22 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 27, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 27, 2014 You can buy a blank mold and take it to a machine shop. Going to be expensive and finding a hook to fit a custom mold might be difficult. There's also the option of making plaster of Paris molds but they don't have a long life span like a metal mold does. JeziHogg Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 1. Buy a blank mold. 2. Find the hook you want to use. 3. Do some measuring and figure out how the lead will look around the hook. 4. Get some heat setting clay and cut off pieces of it to match the lead. 5. Model your jig head around the hook with the clay. 6. Heat the clay so it becomes hard. 7. Bring the jigs you've made with the clay to a machine shop with your blank and get them to cut the mold with a CNC machine. 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted November 27, 2014 Super User Posted November 27, 2014 Take along your check book. I priced having one made for a plastic bait I was wanting to make. My quote was $400. Needless to say I looked for other options. 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted November 27, 2014 Super User Posted November 27, 2014 JeziHogg and Jig Man are spot on, make your clay jig unless you are really good with cad software. It will run about $400 for one size but if you want a 3 cavity mold with different sizes, well now you just made it a lot more because now the jig has to be redesigned to get the weights you want and it will be more than double the price of just cutting a mold based on a model. I have a spinnerbait design of my own that I'm trying to save for and the cheapest quote I got was $4500 because it is going to take a lot of cad work to get the sizes and shape right, the mold cutting will be the least expensive part of the operation.
