Opinions & Results Of The Mitchell 300 Reel.

They used to be fantastic. Then they changed to garbage. Are they good again?

No idea, but I sure wish I had my original spinning outfit (well, the reel anyway).  Don't recall the rod, but the reel was a Mitchell 300 that I used for a good many years.  It would have been 60 years old this past spring.  I actually enjoyed the mechanical noise it produced.  I know that is heresy,  Doubt the 300 makes that kind of noise today.

 

You should buy one, use it awhile, and then give us a review.

I have a Mitchell gold 300 that I got for my wife about 10 years ago and it is just like brand new, it wasn't used hard but it used a good bit between her and my grandson and never one hiccup or problem.

I just ordered 2 of the Avocets. The 500 ul ultra lights on your reccomendations. Cost me  $60 total.  All of my allowance.

I have one of the Avocet Gold II 500UL reels and LOVE it. It is a he'll of a reel for that money.

I have one I received as a gift in 1969. Still works great and still has that mechanical noise.

I also ordered a Mitchell 300. They were fantastic back in the 1950s. I gave up girls just so I could be with the 300.

I own the Mitchell 300 Gold with the wooden handles I bought from BPS on a year end sale years ago. No problems and has been involved with a few battles catching the LMB.

 

It's faster than many of the present day high speed bait casters.

Difficult to compare them across years.  I still have a 50 year old Mitchell 300 that works fine.  I bought a 300 combo in 2006 that was my primary outfit for about 6 years until it crapped out.  I was on a business trip this spring without my gear and bought an Avocet combo at Walmart.  It fished well for about six months before it started grinding, bail stopped filpping automatically and the bail wire fell out.  I have, however, admired the 300 Pro and considered them seriously....but haven't bought one.

It might be nice to have the old ones from a collector stand point but I wouldn't fish with them. Generally I could care less about what a reel weighs but boy are those reels heavy. They were made from actual steel and are super heavy.

New outboards are made with Aluminum that has deliberate tiny air bubbles mixed into the Aluminum. So friggin desparate to be light.  That they do Not last more than 100 hours.

True. Personally I'm another guy that kind of liked the mechanical noise.  Probably wouldn't be using it if I still had it because it was the first reel I ever had.  Given to me by my father who is long gone so its main value would be sentimental.

  The 300 just arrived. It is a fantastic reel, just cranking it . NO off balance rotations at any speed.........Very impressed with the drag turned down to MINIMUM.

  Wife noticed a plastic bag with 2 white plastic rings.  Anyone know what they are for ?  She grabbed the reel as soon as I said it works very well. 

 

Birthday gift tomorrow.

 

Really excited about the 500 ul Avocets coming.
