BammerBass Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 My favorite is this Zebco ZS1 5'6" light action rod and reel. My mother bought this for my birthday about 16 years ago, and it has been my "ace of spades" on several occassions, and espcially so this year. She died 6 years ago due to cancer, and this rod and reel will always be special to me. It has seen a good share of bluegill and crappie over the years, an ccassional bass here and there. And then this yesr, caught several nice bluegill on it, a handful of bass, hang a 4lber on it last month that snapped the line as i got it halfway up thr pier. And for some reason ive done far, far better with it then either of the two new light/ultralight set ups i just got recently. Only caught one drum on the new ultralight, and absolutely zilch on thst new light action rod. In fact that day I caught that bass I just asked "what does this bass weigh" in different section of this forum. Very first cast with that rod that day I caught thst 16" largemouth. There Is just SOMETHING about that rod that seems to make me do much better.Maybe im just so used to it is one thing, but its hands down caught a lt more fhan the fwo new ones. And now it has a fresh spool of 4lb test, so it is ready to go again. 2 Quote
ABW Posted November 27, 2014 Posted November 27, 2014 Sorry to hear about your mother, that's a beautiful gift she gave you.  I don't really have a sentimental rod and reel, but this is just my favorite.  Lews TP 7.1:1 Powell Endurance 714 1 Quote
Super User HoosierHawgs Posted November 27, 2014 Super User Posted November 27, 2014 Used Lew's Tournament w/ a used St Croix Triumph. Good Spinnerbait setup. Has enough back bone to drive a hook home, while being light enough to fish w/ all day and be very sensitive. 1 Quote

Lews is definitely known for quality products   Used Lew's Tournament w/ a used St Croix Triumph. Good Spinnerbait setup. Has enough back bone to drive a hook home, while being light enough to fish w/ all day and be very sensitive. nice, nice. Sensitivity and power are a rare combination in rods. My dad says that rod of mine is too light to land a real big fish, and while that may be true, the sensitivity it has makes it soooooo much easier to pick up hits. Ive caught crappie just by watching the line twitch or the rod jiggle ever so slightly, and by feeling the slightest of bumps. Just cant power anything with it, but still pound for pound, it is the best rod i have. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 27, 2014 Super User Posted November 27, 2014 The combo that has caught the most fish for me that I still have is around 40 years old and like yours, a spinning outfit....a 6' Berkley Lightning and Penn 430SS. Not my favorite as these days I prefer a baitcast set-up. We've had plenty of similar threads, and I've never been able to pick just one. My Curado 51E/6'10" MF Smallmouth, Zillion 50th/7' MHF Rainshadow RX7, Fuego/ 7'2" MHF Cumara and Purple Alphas/ 7'3" MF *** are some of my favorites. Just got a Tatula Type R and 7'2" MHR Tatula rod that looks like it will be joining my list of favorites.  Problem is next time I pick up something to head for the water with, that list could be added to...by a multitude of combos. Quote

And forgive me mods if I have created a duplicate type post. Im just not sure whst to do. A lot of forums that I go to (non fishing related), dont like it when you post on s particular topic thst is over about 2-3 since its last reply. Im a newbie so itll take me a while to lesrn the ropes here. And i know not to take it personally if you do move something i post, bcauze the "read befoee you post" section says, moving a post will gwt it to the appropriate area and thus makes it easier on the moderators to keep up with, and that makes thst post much .ore accessible to other people and makes it more likely to get replies and /or answers. Super User new2BC4bass Posted November 27, 2014 Super User Posted November 27, 2014 The same questions get asked many times throughout the year, yet most of us still reply to them....over and over. No harm.  Normally someone who didn't see or participate in the first post may do so in the second....giving another opinion.  If you post a question that as already been asked and a like post is still on the first page, then its a guarantee someone will say something about it within your thread. However, I've never known a moderator to delete such a post unless it was the same person making both posts.  Regarding choices....yes...I have too many for a guy who doesn't get out nearly as often as most on here. Fishing in my area sucks. About the only thing keeping me from quitting again (I quit for 23 years because of it) is the better gear I now have. And the fact that I keep adding to it.  EDIT: Week ago Monday I got 2 new rods. Couple weeks before that 2 new reels. Unfortunately one rod arrived with the tip broke off even though the tube was in perfect shape. The rod had been allowed to move freely within the tube with no protection for the tip other than a little newspaper in front of the tube's endcap. Super User SirSnookalot Posted November 27, 2014 Super User Posted November 27, 2014 My favorite reel, Quantum cabo 40 is not on my favorite rod it's on a Star 7'6 mh, due to wanting different lure parameters, I'm still very happy with it. Â I'm at the point of not wanting to expand the number of combos I have but some of the equipment will be replaced, although there is no urgency. Â I have a few reels that are just getting worn out, have some money into them, thinking it's wiser just to buy some new reels. Â Most likely I'll be buying Quantum smoke inshore spinning reels. Most fun I'm having with a freshwater set up is a Berkley ul rod and a trion ul reel 1 Quote

BammerBass Posted November 27, 2014 Author Posted November 27, 2014 Most fun I'm having with a freshwater set up is a Berkley ul rod and a trion ul reel Man Ultralight fishing is a blast!!!! Them 2lbers are fun as heck on an ultralight set up, and then you occassionally run into that rogue 4/5lber and you better pack a lunch in thwt case found that out the hard way a couple weeks ago. Hung one I am quite certain was a solid 4 on my special rod my mother bought me, and even though the line snapped as I was trying to grt it up the pier, that was one heck of a battle!! I thought given the situation i was in at the time (high pier, with a steep trail to get to the water) i did pretty well to keep it on as long as i did. It.actually gave my right shoulder out trying to reel it/hold it therr for my dad to get down to it lol. gah i wish i coulda landed it, im about as close to100% certain as one can be without a a scale that was a good 4 lber and no questtion would have been my personal best. There is just something specislnabout thsr rod momma bought me thst has lead to very good success. Even if it ends up breaking,I will not throw it away, it justmeans far too much to me for me tk do that if it bappens. I consider it a symbol of our shared passion for this great sport and pastime of fishing. Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted November 27, 2014 Global Moderator Posted November 27, 2014 The combo I use the most which has become my favorite is a Fenwick Techna AV with a Curado E7 reel. It's my plastics combo. With 15# Invisex it's darn near perfect for what I do. Mike Quote

Super User Darren. Posted November 27, 2014 Super User Posted November 27, 2014 For me, favorites can change based on my preferences at the moment...  That said, if I had to pick one combo right now it would be my Chronarch 50e + ML Carbonlite which allows me to throw most everything I can throw on spinning gear.  Predominately, the combo is super light, lighter than any of my spinning combos, and lightness is currently a big thing for me. Not to mention it is super smooth, and with the upgraded bearings, casts incredibly well. Quote
