Japan Tackle says that the sideplate on the 300/400 doesn't open up. Only the 100 and 200 sizes open up.

To the OP, Japan Tackle has the older model Conquest 300 for $409.00. I know it's more than you want to spend, but if the Conquest 300 is anything like the Conquest 50 and Conquest 100, it's money well spent. I know if I had the cash, there would be one on the way to my front door.

I saw that. I'm definitely going to consider it. It's a little more than I wanted to spend, but for a reel that good, I might need to make an exception!:D I've narrowed it down to the jdm Calcutta d and the conquest. Thanks for the advise guys

How does the TE compare to the Conquest? (I'm assuming they're both better than the E12) I'm still thinking E12, just considering the other options.

The Calcutta TE-GT models (sizes 50, 100, 200) were more or less de-contented (different handle, no porting on the frame or sideplate) U.S. market Conquests but are functionally the equivalent of a Conquest. However, the TE-GTs, along with the Calcutta TEs (sizes 200, 300, 400, 700) were discontinued a number of years ago but are commonly available on the used market.

Today, if you want to go with a new Shimano, the best choices boil down to the Calcutta D (USDM or JDM - whatever floats your boat) or spend a bit more and go for the Conquest.  Keep in mind that the Conquest is in the middle of a product upgrade. The new 100 and 200 sizes were released earlier this year - the new 300 and 400 sizes are expected sometime early next year (but no release date has been confirmed yet). Something to consider if you decided to go with a Conquest.  Depending on the exchange rate at the time, the new Conquests could end up quite a bit above your price range however.

Hmm, my CTE200GT's are ported on the frame tops.. Along with easy access brake side plate, also a ported spool, which decreases, considerably, the use of 20 co-poly line often the choice of swimbait fisherman. The reels are plenty tough. Line capacity may be a problem.

Funny as the luna was compared in a TT article and was above everything except the TE-DC reels which were more than twice the cost.

Why would you even consider paying twice as much or more for a reel that is not twice as good and has to be opened up to be adjusted?

^^I'm not considering the new conquest, the old (2003) is already a little out of the price range I wanted to spend (yikes!). The 300 conquest @ Japan Tackle is the one I'm considering for $409.

I saw that Luna. I'll definitely consider it. I'm kinda stuck on a shimano though lol.

For the money you're spending, you can get a brand new Calcutta 250DC on ebay that will blow away the Conquest and has a warranty. Identical performance, but casts twice as good.

Great suggestion and another nice reel but it could be line capacity limited if the OP really wants/needs a "300" size.  I sure like my 100DC - nifty reel.

The 250DC will hold almost 140 yards of 50lb braid. If you can cast that far, I'd like to shake your hand

Since the OP was originally looking for 300/400 size reels - I guess my thought was he was thinking of something like 17-25 pound nylon/flouro/co-poly line.

Anyway - lots of great suggestions but we keep taking the OP above his price point which he stated was preferably under $300...;)  In that price range, it keeps going back to a Calcutta D (but the Luna is an interesting alternative!).

Interesting I'll have to check that out. Same as 250DC on TW for $530?

Ya some how price range went from under $300 to $430 lol. Anyways, like I said, it doesn't really matter (it'll just take a lot longer to save up for it!) I'm still open to just about anything though including the Luna and the D.

If you are looking for a luna simmons sporting goods on the auction site has them NIB for a lot less than other places new or used.  I got my first two from them.  Look at line capacity as the 300 is much larger than the 253.

I might just wait for the TW Shimano sale. If I remember correctly, it's 25% off. Then I could get the DC for $400 brand new with free shipping. (That's probably how long it'll take me to save up the $$ as well!)

That sale is usually during the classic. I'm hoping they have it again myself.
