I fish from the bank. I was wanting to know some ideas for trying to find out the water temp.

Get a swimming pool thermometer and tie a string on it and throw it in the water for about a minute.

Simple and inexpensive way to get water temperatures.

Ask someone you see as they troll by. Most anglers I have experienced are more willing to share information who is bank fishing. Maybe because they know your not going to go highjack their secret spot. Also, if it is a popular lake look online for fishing conditions in the forums, water temp is important so their should be lots of information readily accessible on the web. If Not throw the pool thermometer in like mentioned above, however be cognizant that is only the temp for the top say 6 inches of the water column, and likely several degrees (10+) warmer than the lower water columns.

I just use fishingnotes.com's estimated water temp.  It gives me a good ideaon what to expect when I go out.  Depends on where your fishing though. Private ponds etc. probably won't be on there.

Just like Sam mentioned, a Swimming Pool Thermometer works great. I picked this one up at Wallmart earlier in the year (very cheap). Takes less than 30 sec to get a accurate reading and it even floats.

I have a digital aquarium thermometer I got from Petco that I keep in my tackle bag. Works great.

Thermometer with a longish probe (surface temps are kinda useless). I have an Acurite (forget which model) with a 10' probe. Also, when you catch a bass, put the probe down in its gullet to measure the water temp at the depth it was.
