I know you're gonna lose a lot of jigs fishing rip rap but what am I best off with. Fished football jigs all summer and didnt hang up too much and fished some casting jigs in rip rap? What are your favorites?

The "safest" jig for rocks is football head, all the rest will hang up a lot more. Now that I come and think about it in more detail I should definately shut my trap, the safest, lol, from tha dude capable to loose a jig on the first cast .....and not only does it once.

It's true... a football head is the way to go.  Even when they do get hung up, they never seems to get really wedged and you can usually back them out by moving the boat and pulling from the other direction.

Definitely a football jig. Also fish the lightest jig you can get away with and try to fish down the rocks and not across them as much and you won't lose as many.

You're going to lose jigs in rip rap, just one of those sure things. Football jigs are best at avoiding snags, but you're still going to lose them.

There's lots of money in a few shorelines now. Losing jigs is nothing new. Rip rap is some nasty stuff.

I fish a lot of rip rap and have used all kinds of heads. I lose all of them but have found that the bigger heads like 3/4 and 1 oz don't get hung as often as the lighter weight ones do.

I agree, football head is the way to go, nothing better than a football head when fishing rip-rap.

Try using a Nu-Tech jig, apparently it is almost impossible to get them hung up.

Trust me they still get hung even in places you wouldn't think you would get hung you get hung its just one of those things

Jigs in rip rap? Ugg, hard on a mans wallet.

If you are fishing rip rap from a boat and working the jig down hill, shallow to deeper water, several jig head designs work OK if it's not allowed to settle down into the rock crevices.

If you are shore bond and working deep to shallow in rip rap, a jig may not be a good choice, try a pegged bullet weight and craw trailer, not a jig.

So you have some experience with using this jig?   I have used the jig very little and have come to my own conclusions, I will keep them to myself but I would be interested in yours.

A new thread may be appropriate.

In my own experiences, the *** jigs worked very well at not getting hung up in brush piles and lay downs. I didn't notice a huge difference in hang up rates in the rip rap where I fish, but I'm convinced that those rocks will eat up anything I throw at it. I have not tried the *** football jigs there though just the normal head. Also, I fish from the bank so that probably doesn't help either. I like the *** jigs a lot, but for my applications I prefer a cheaper football jig like the bass patrol.

That is a nice looking short bill Scrounger style jig, don't need that weed guard however.

Scroungers are excellent swim jigs anywhere.

I don't think it is a bill, it is a ring I believe.

I agree with Tom here.

And I'll tell you that I take it a step further.  Though I don't fish a ton of rock or rip rap, when I am faced with it, this rig has proven pretty successful.  The important part of it is the weighted swim bait hook instead of a nose weighted Texas rig; helps keep the bait gliding along rather than nose diving into cracks and snagging.

The rig from line to hook consists of a stopper, a Cobra Black Head or a Paycheck Baits Head Case with the spring removed (I painted the white one), your choice of shirt and whatever weighted swim bait hook you prefer.  These are all Falcon Lures Bait-Jerk EWG Hooks.  Think of it as a punch rig with a swim bait hook instead of a front mounted bullet weight.

The plastics pictured (top to bottom) are a Gene Larew Biffle Bug. a Rage Lobster,  two Rage Eeliminators.  The plastic you choose can be almost anything you’d normally use as a moving bait trailer: even a swim bait like a Skinny Dipper.

Makes a decent search bait, great for soft bottom  and very rock (Rip Rap) areas and is good from the bank as well.   One could even rig it with a very light weighted hook (or no weight) and drag it on top.

I admit the picture posted does look that way, I researched a few others that did not.  Look at the location of the line tie, seems like it would be in the wrong location to make it a billed bait.
