Girl friend wants to get me a new rod for xmas. I currently have a st croix triumph 6'6 MF

I have a Pflueger Supreme XT reel that I want to switch over to the new rod.

I am thinking

St. Croix premiere spinning 7' HF 2 piece.

I mostly fish for large mouth. Is a heavy rod overkill?

Senko texas rigged

Should I stick with medium strength?

I do fish a lot of weedy areas, so thought stronger rod with heavy line would help me get the fish out of the weed cover.

If anyone has thoughts or wants to throw out a rod they think is better let me hear it!

Must be 2 piece rod!

Price needs to be around $150

I think you would be better off buying a "gently used" Avid, that's where St.Croix shines.

Specifically, AVS68MXF or AVS70MF.

Another option to consider is the Pinnacle DHC5-681SPM.

Keep an eye on our Flea Market. By the time all of your snow melts

I'm pretty sure one of these rods will pop up! Otherwise, check the

Black Friday sales. The rods list for around $190 and you might get

a 25% dfiscount at some of the retailers.

This might be a better option very close to your pricing point:

Pinnacle DHC5-701CAMH. We have numerous reviews of the

Pinnacle line-up: http://www.bassresource.com/content/search?SearchText=pinnacle&BrowsePageLimit=30

A heavy power rod is probably going to be a bit much for what it sounds like what you are doing with it. Both of my senko rods are medium power and I fish around the same type of cover you do. If you want a little extra backbone, you could go with the MH.

That looks nice. But its a 1 piece rod. I put rods in car a LOT so 2 piece is kinda necessary... :/

One of those new stubby cars that are about 6 feet long total?  I can fit a one piece rod 7'8" long in my sedan.

I'd go with MH.

If your not stuck to St Croix; Check out Fenwick Tech Elite bass, better buy than a premier imo.

Like mentioned above though and Avid is a very nice stick too.

Ahh. I mean it will fit. But is just a pain. I leave my pole in a tube in the truck most of the time. So kinda wanna stick with that. haha

If she's willing to spend the $130 to get you a St. Croix Premier, tell her you'll thow in $20 extra and get yourself a Dobyns Savy.

I wouldn't use a Heavy power rod for your application (overkill). Medium in spinning will handle almost anything. MH if you're going to be throwing bigger lures (big cranks, spinnerbaits, large topwaters).

Also, is there any reason why you want a 2 piece rod?

Mainly because I keep my rod in a cardboard tube to protect it in the trunk of my car. I just leave it in the trunk so if I ever happen apon a fishing spot I can just go. I hate having my 1 piece casting rod sticking up through middle of bmw. The end of it is on my arm wrest! AHHH!

Dobyns Savy you say?

Nothing wrong with St. Croix Premier.   Great rod with 5 yr warranty built here in America!

Get the 2 piece avid during Black Friday, I'm pretty sure tw puts st croix on sale, should end up being around 150. The avid is worth the extra cash IMO.

I use med for senkos, if you feel like you need more power you could go mh

I look at the weights of baits that you're throwing to decide what power rod I want to use. Any bottom bait (jigs, trigs, shakey heads) over 1/2 ounce gets a heavy.  1/2 oz - 3/8 oz gets a MH.  1/4 oz gets a medium.  In moderately heavy cover I fish 3/8 oz jigs a lot and a medium heavy helps pull fish out just fine. I wouldn't want it for real thick stuff though.

For treble hook baits I generally just step everything down a notch. Anything over 1/2 oz gets a MH etc.  For real big baits like 6xd's and 10 xd's you want a heavy though.

You're probably in the ball park for a medium heavy.  St Croix Premier 7' MH will fit in your car. You don't have to buy a two piece.  I fit mine in cars all the time.

Personally I feel you made a good choice.  I don't have one of those models yet, but do have Elite Tech, Smallmouth, HMG, River Runner, Techna AV and Aetos models.  I have become a fan of Fenwick rods.  You get a lot for your money.  I feel safe in saying that you will enjoy that rod.  Post back how you like it after some time using it.

Really liked the fact that they have the hidden handle design!

And for $120 with the 20% off I was sold! :)

MH is the heaviest I would use. If you are fishing stickbaits I don't see why you would need a stiff rod. I use a medium, and fish w/braid and do just fine. But everyone's situation is different. I would recommend the Medium Heavy though.
