Super User NorcalBassin Posted January 28, 2020 Super User Posted January 28, 2020 Finally decided to upgrade the 859 I've had on the bow the past few years with a Helix 10 so I can use all the network features with the gen2 Helix 9 that's on the console. Can't wait to get it out on the water and have a split screen I can actually see. I also put a graph glass protector on it (thanks for the video instructions @A-Jay!). Â 7 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 28, 2020 Global Moderator Posted January 28, 2020 Had a gift card and some time to kill at BPS. The 6th Sense baits came in the mail today. Really excited about the suspending lipless. Got big plans for that one that I hope work out. 13 Quote

Those baits were supposedly 1/2oz, but I'd be surprised if they were anywhere near that. The times I could get them to hit nose down so they'd head down in the water and suspend, fish would knock the fire out of them just pulling them and stopping over submerged grass and rocky banks.  This one feels light for a 7/8oz bait, but much heavier than the old baits I have. I have high hopes that I'll be able to do the same slow, stop and go, or pull and stop retrieves I did with the other baits. Just a completely different sound and profile than what they're use to seeing moving along slowly and hanging in their face. They've been completely ignoring my other lipless baits the last couple months during what is normally prime trapping season, so it's time to mix it up! 4 1 Quote

You've got to give them a few seconds to right themselves after they hit the water when they land on their side. You can't start retrieving right away. I don't have much patience for that. Â That Quake 80 is beautiful, and with the larger size/weight, I'd be real surprised if it has that problem. Please let us know how it works out. Â 1 Quote

One thing that helps is removing the split ring and putting a heavier hook on the front, but you're right, they don't work like you'd expect them to. I've also tried gluing tiny strips of lead on the front bottom, it helps, but still not great. Â That larger size seems like it would solve the problem, and I'd like to buy one, but I'd prefer you to be the guinea pig ? 1 Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted January 28, 2020 Super User Posted January 28, 2020 So yesterday afternoon I stepped out on to the front porch and saw a small package had been delivered.  But the box didn’t have the familiar fish in the rectangle on the side. Then I remembered the package was from my friend, Mr. Jones (The Bait Monkey) who won the Ebay surfing contest last week. These are gonna be fun during frogging season... 9 Quote

Dangerfield Posted January 29, 2020 Posted January 29, 2020 My wife took delivery on my new jig rod and echoed my concerns on the dodgy rod packaging. Probably the worst I've ever seen from Amazon. So far I like the feel of the winn grips, still subject to how they'll perform under certain weather conditions. The rod is surprisingly light compared to my dobyns fury, which I think is 6.6oz, it hides it's weight with good balance. I've only used fuji reel seats and this one isn't much different other than a longer trigger. I also like the softex plastic used on the trigger. Overall can't friggin wait to get out on the water. Hows the sizing? Would you describe it as "traditional" mens sizing or the new age "large" that fits like a small? The large fits like a large. Big enough for a couple layers, but I'm not swimming in it. 1 Quote

MAnderson Posted January 30, 2020 Posted January 30, 2020 Well, I went to the Fishing Expo in Doswell. Picked up two packs of 5/0 Raynaldo Enterprises hooks obstencillay for tubes. In hindsight I didn’t need the hooks. And I’m trying to concentrate on all Made In The USA tackle...so this was like a Bait Monkey mugging. ? 1 Quote

Amazon rod packaging is usually a horror show, based on what I've read. I think you're probably lucky it got there in one piece. Â I've got one rod with Winn grips on it (a Lew's TP1 black), and I've had it out in mud, rain, sleet, all that. Never had to do more than wipe them down with a wet rag, then follow that up with a dry rag, and it's like nothing ever happened. Â Hopefully that'll help assuage some of your concern. 1 Quote

That has been my experience with ordering rods from Amazon. I decided after my last experience that I will no longer be ordering rods from them. I ordered a Daiwa Tatula Elite with the AGS guides through them. It showed up in a long cardboard box that was all of about 2"x2" and had no protection whatsoever for the rod. I opened the box to find the rod in two pieces. It hurt my heart a little to see such a nice rod treated like that. I returned it and promptly ordered the same rod from tacklewarehouse knowing that they know how to properly ship a rod. Quote
