Quantumbrick Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 So I am looking to buy a rod around the 100-120 ish price range. I hear good things about the Denali Rosewoods, Veritas 2.0 and the Clarus. Any other good ones? And which do you think is "Best" Also no Black *** as I own one and would like to see what others have to offer, Quote
camo Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 What are you looking to do with the rod? Just an all around rod? Quote
Hogsticker Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Phenix is coming out with a new 100 dollar stick called the Maxim. May be worth a look if you can get past the aesthetics. Otherwise the Fenwick Hmg is pretty solid buy. I'd definitely pick one up over the Abu and Denali. Black Friday see what provide the opportunity to pick up a better stick. Quote
PNWdude Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 If you prefer EVA grips over cork I'd recommend trying out a Falcon BuCoo rod. They even have a micro-guide option if you're interested. I have a 6'10" MHF and am super happy with it. I used it for everything this year, from topwater baits to weightless plastics, t-rigs, c-rigs, jigs, spinnerbaits, squarebills, lipless cranks. I never felt like it didn't have enough power to get things done and it's really light. Made in the USA and has a limited lifetime warranty. Quote
Super User ww2farmer Posted November 19, 2014 Super User Posted November 19, 2014 Â Right at the $100 mark, I have Fenwick HMG's and Abu Veritas's...................flip a coin. Quote
5fishlimit Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 Check the auction site for Daiwa Tatula rods. Â You can get one in your price range. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 19, 2014 Super User Posted November 19, 2014  I Hope The Opinions Won't Be Too Mixed About This But...  You're kidding, right? LOL.  I have a question: For What? Makes a difference as to what to recommend. 1 Quote
bass raider Posted November 19, 2014 Posted November 19, 2014 like others have said it depends on what you plan to do with it.fenwick hmg.veritas 2.0,duckett ghost, powell inferno, falcon bucoo or Jason Christie sig. series(same rod as bucoo),shimano compre(really like that one) are all good rods in your range.i too am interested in seeing what the new phenix maxim will be like.as mentioned earlier wait till black Friday or closeout sales.i got a $200 rod for $140 thanks to a closeout sale. Robert Riley Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 If you are cranking, Veritas Winch is what I use, since sensitivity is not super important. I have a Fenwick Elite tech ($150) I use for dropshots and shakeyheads, and I've heard good things about the HMGs. I'm eager to hear what the Maxim is like too. Â That's my $0.02 Quote
Quantumbrick Posted November 20, 2014 Author Posted November 20, 2014 yea I probably should have specified, my mistake. I am looking to be throwing jigs with this rod in a rocky area. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted November 20, 2014 Super User Posted November 20, 2014 Fenwick HMG.... Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted November 20, 2014 Super User Posted November 20, 2014 Quantum Smoke rod super light well balanced with a backbone for those jigs Quote
Kyle46N Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Another vote for a Falcon Buccoo.  I own a 7 ft medium action, and I love it. It's done battle wtih big red drum and jack in the salt. That's a MEDIUM. I wouldn't think twice what a MH or H would handle....especially bass fishing. Add in they are very light and sensitive, it's a no brainer.  Quote
Robert Riley Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 I'd say the Fenwick then. The Veritas are awful in regards to sensitivity in my opinion. Although my jig rod is a Dobyns Extreme haha a little more pricey than a Veritas. Quote
Super User Darren. Posted November 20, 2014 Super User Posted November 20, 2014 Since nobody has recommended these, the BPS Carbonlite rods.  I own two, and I was highly interested in the Fenwicks, others, which I was able to mess with at a Cabelas while on vacation.  Personally, I felt the CLs were lighter in the tip than the others. That means more to me right now, having suffered through elbow issues.  Just my .02. All the other rods mentioned will be excellent choices as well... Quote
Super User Long Mike Posted November 20, 2014 Super User Posted November 20, 2014 There are many, many rods out there that fit your price range and there are ten times as many opinions. Find a rod that YOU like and buy it. My opinion is that the BPS Carbonlites are worth looking at, but then so are (fill in the blanks here with others opinions.) 1 Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted November 20, 2014 Super User Posted November 20, 2014 I've yet to spend over $200 for a rod, but own 3 Veritas (2 piece 6'6" M/F, 7' M/F, and 2 piece 6'9" MH/F) a Vendetta (7' M/M), and a Villain (7'1" M/MF).  I also own CarbonLite, *** *** Black, Fenwick, and Diawa rods (all of which are very good rods) and overall like my Abu's the best.  My Villian is the lightest, and the Veritas load up the best.  The Vendetta casts great and has the stiffest feel of the lot.  I also have a 2-piece 6'6" M/F Vengeance I picked up a WallyMart for $29 that I keep in the truck for those 'just in case' times.  I can't speak for the Veritas 2.0's, but of all the rods I own, my Veritas are my favorites. They're the ones I'd keep if I ever had to pare down my herd.  Rod feel is a very subjective thing, so use members' feedback as guidelines and try to handle as many rods as possible and pick the one that feels best to you.  Good luck with your choice.   1 Quote
Robert Riley Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 I can attest to the quality of TFO products, I have a 6'6 M jerk/topwater, great rod.  I've yet to spend over $200 for a rod, but own 3 Veritas (2 piece 6'6" M/F, 7' M/F, and 2 piece 6'9" MH/F) a Vendetta (7' M/M), and a Villain (7'1" M/MF). I'm personally interested in a squarebill/medium diver crank rod, would you recommend the veritas over any other Abus? Quote
bass1980 Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 Site sponsor valley tackle sells tatula rods for cheaper than retail. I really like them and that reel seat feels awesome. Light and crips. Plenty sensitive for a rod in that range. I just dont realky like all that gold trim but it's personal preference. 1 Quote

Best of luck. Quote
EmersonFish Posted November 20, 2014 Posted November 20, 2014 I'd take that $100-$120 and see what might pop up as a "too good to pass up" deal in one of the Black Friday/Cyber Monday type sales. You might be able to get something that is normally in the $150 range, which can be a pretty nice step up. If nothing comes up, there are still a ton of quality rods in that $100-$120. Almost every manufacturer is battling to win that price-point. I think, particularly with a jig rod, what feels right in your hand is important. With a question that open, you'll get too many opinions here to really do you much good. I know that's the boring answer. I apologize. Some guy is selling a never used MH Micro Magic for $120 TYD here on the board. You can look for deals like that as well. Quote
Super User deep Posted November 20, 2014 Super User Posted November 20, 2014 1. Nice cat you got there. Â 2. Does anyone who's not on their pro-staff actually fish Denali rods? Â 3. Shimano Compre is a good choice. There are a bunch of others as seen above. Quote
black94gt50 Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 I just got a fenwick hmg a few weeks ago. No doubt in my mind it's the best built rod I have seen in the 100$ range. I've had and fished a lot of rods around that range, and the fenwick has been my favorite so far. Wish I had more of them. Quote
