Have a question about how/where to trade/obtain new gun.  Hope this doesn't violate the rules, and to be clear I AM NOT TRYING TO SELL OR TRADE THIS HERE.  My question is this.  I want to obtain a new pistol like a compact or sub-compact and then get a concealed permit.  I currently have a horse of a handgun, a Taurus PT-92 (9MM).  It's just too big, bulky and frankly too flashy for me.  My dad gave it to me a while back.  I would like to trade for a smaller less flashy option more suitable for the wife to handle as well and just need to know my best place to start.  Would you suggest a gun shop, pawn shop, where?  I'm a newb on the sale and trade of guns though i've had guns all my life.  just help point me in the right direction or if you can provide some info online to read that would be much appreciated as well.  Located just northwest of Atlanta if that helps.

Thanks.

If you are not comfortable with a private sale/trade, the local gun shop would be your best bet. They should also be able to set you up with a local ccw class if thats what you want to do.

As far as buying, unless you're set on supporting your lgs, better deals can be found online. Also find out what the transfer would cost at the lgs. It's usually $20 in my area.

Slickguns.com is a good place to start looking for deals if you had a specific make or model in mind.

Your only to serious options would be a trade in at a trusted gun shop, or a private sale of the exist pistol so you can use the cash received to buy what you're looking for.  Whatever you choose, your first step should be to find out the value of that Taurus.  Find both the Retail and Wholesale values.  The local gun store is only going to give you the lower wholesale price on a trade-in.  They're the best choice if you want to avoid the hassle of waiting to find a buyer yourself.  If you don't mind the cost of advertising the sale and dealing with who knows how many people who try to pimp down your asking price, then a private sale is the way to go.

My choice if it was me.  Find out the best price I could expect, and trade it in to the guy that offers you the closest to that value.

thanks for that info.  the prices on gun broker are just all over the board it seems.  mostly ones in good shape like mine going for around $400 or so it looks like.  mine has some gold accent pieces which are a little upgrade so hopefully $400 is a pretty decent price to have in mind for retail price on it?  let's just say the pistol is selling around $400 from one individual to another..... what might i expect as a fair trade in value for it at a reputable gun shop?

i appreciate the info guys.

Around my neck of the woods I have made buddies with two of the local pawn shop owners. I trust them and we are always wheeling and dealing. You aren't going to like trade in options at a gun shop. Take it into a few pawn shops (ones that advertise guns, not these inner city ones) and see what they would give you trade vs buying from you. Most likely if you see $400 online they will be at $200-$225 purchase and closer to actual retail for trade, depending on what you trade for. Good luck.
