What Do You Use To Clean Up The Inside Of The Reel?

What is it that you guys use to clean the inside of your reels?(Be it isopropyl alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, real magic, wd-40, etc.)

My favorite cheap solvent for clean-up and degreasing work is 91% Isopropyl Alcohol from the local drug store.  If I need something a little stronger, I have Acetone, or carb or brake cleaner aerosols.

Be carefull of acetone. It will plastic.

I use dawn dish soap or meangreen q tips and i finish up with rem oil on bearings and penn grease on gears

CRC electronic parts cleaner. It will not harm plastic, disolves grime/grease, evaporates on it's own, and comes in a spray can, which is handy for "blasting" gunk out of some hard to reach spots.

I use a "safety solvent"  (Trichloroethylene and Isopropyl Alcohol)  it is safe on most plastic. You can use 1,1,1,2-Tetrafluoroethane (Contact Cleaner) which is safe on virtually all plastics, but very expensive and if you live in CA. you're SOL on both.

Lighter fluid works great. It is the best for bearings and it breaks up all the oil and grease on gear or whatever. It all pretty much just falls off with no scrubbing and works far better then Alchohol.

Dish washing soap with warm water + soft bristle toothbrush on plastic (non-metal) parts, bare frame and side plates, 

 

Mild degreaser + Hard BristleToothbrush on metal parts (pinion gears, main, gear, drive shafts, rachets etc) after rinsing and drying will do some polishing.

 

Acetone or lighter fluid on bearings.

For just the inside of the reel, bearings and gears excluded, I use a 50-50 mix of Simple Green and hot water in a container, hold the reel over the container then with a soft brush keep brushing with the solution until it is clean, rinse under the laundry tub faucet with hot water and blow dry the reel with a computer key board blower.  My gears and bearings are cleaned separately.

I wipe off the excess grease and oil on the gears, shaft, frame, and side plate, then place them in a container and spray a good amount of simple green and let it sit. Afterwards, a soft bristle tooth brush and scrub away at what's left over and rinse with warm eater. i use lighter fluid for bearings.
