Ok my dad has given me $200 to spend on fishing stuff and ive always had cheaper rod and reel combos so I don't have much expierence in the more expensive stuff! So im wondering should I get a $100 rod and $100 reel or should I go for a $200 reel and out it on a pole I have laying around? The pole I have laying around is a Berkley Hank Parker Signature Series. So what should I do? THANKS!!

In most of my setups the rod and the reel cost about the same, For 200 I would get me for example a Daiwa S rod paired to a Daiwa Exceller ( or Lexa now that they are on sale ) or a Shimano Citica G and a Clarus rod.

Tatula @ 100 might work well for you on your existing rod, or, there's quite a few rods you could get into for around 100... Decisions, Decisions

go look into a BPS combo with one of the Pro Qualifier/carbonlite or one of the other options...you can get yourself a great set up for under the $200 mark you have...

I'd go 150 reel

And a 50$ store brand rod on sale

Walmart.com typically has great deals on reels

My first was a lews speed spool for like 130$ or so

And a 50$ cabelas guide series IM6 rod MH fast

X2.  If any family members are public safety or veterans, drag them along.  BPS offers them 10% off on most items.

Then buy them a beer, or lunch with your discount...

If we're talking about baitcasters:

Step 1. Buy a good used reel for around $80.

Step 2. Wait till the Black Friday sales, and buy a nice shiny new rod.

Step 3. Enjoy your new $300 combo.

Step 4. Post the fish you catch.

For spinning combo, I'd go $50 for an used reel, and spend the rest on the rod.

if bait cast combo, can't go wrong with a tatula reel for $100 on amazon and an *** black rod for $100 anywhere you look.  look at americanlegacyfishing and sign up for email newsletter.  get $25 coupon and get *** for like $85 shipped....  i have one *** and soon to purchase a second.

Do you have plenty of lures and other tackle? That would affect what advice I would give you. For example, if you need more lures, hooks, weights and such, I would suggest spending a little less than $200 on your rod and reel so you can get some other stuff to tie onto the end of your line ;)

Hard to recommend if you don't specify which type of reel you want.

Spinning:  President 6930X $59.95 list or wait for Black Friday.  Fenwick HMGS70ML-F $68.88 at FFO...list $109.95.  *** 6'10" ML-XF or 7'1" MF $99.99 list.  Or haunt the classifieds for favorites of yours.

Baitcast:  Daiwa Lexa $99.88 on sale at TW, T3 Ballistic $109.88 on sale at TW, Tatula on flea-bay around $100 (I'm a fan of Daiwa, :teeth: ), Pflueger Supreme, Lews, PQ.  Fenwick HMG 7' MF or MHF (Fenwick fan here), Falcon BuCoo or Original or a Tatula during Black Friday sales.  Or haunt the classifieds for one of your preferred choices.

That's funny right there.

Or do like I do.  Pick up some plastic containers at Walmart and store the excess in the containers.....which stay in my car's trunk.  Much cheaper than new tackle bags....which get heavy fast if any size.  No sense in hauling a forklift with you to move all your gear to the boat/shore.  :teeth:

Right now there's some sick deals going on. I would do this:

  • Get two Lew's Speed Spools. Right now (offer ends tomorrow), you can get it for 50 bucks. Gander Mountain has it on sale for 100. They have a deal running where you can get 20 dollars off of a hundred dollars spent. Then you can mail in the included rebate and get it for 58 dollars (w/ tax). Shipping is free too over the holidays.
  • Cabela's has the Abu Garcia Veritas (100 dollar rod) on sale for 50. Get two of them for your Lews.

You'd be getting two combos that are worth 460 dollars for 200.

Wow.  Nice research young man.  So many good deals coming up for Black Friday that there isn't enough free hours in a day to check them all out.

OP.   Best if you can make a decision on the rod and reel you want, then search out deals for those.  Sales and closeouts are about the only time I buy new.  Now is a good time to keep an eye on the classifieds.  I've seen some very, very good deals already slip through my fingers for the lack of funds.  I did pick up a like new 6.3:1 Tatula and a like new 7'2" MHR Tatula recently that I'm going to have to call "The Black Assassin".  Sweet looking combo.  Total was under your $200 limit.  Black Friday may see you being able to get new of each for the same price I paid.  If a baitcasting combo is what you are looking for, I doubt you would be dissatisfied with this combo.

Good luck with narrowing the field to one.  Be sure to let us know your decision.
