Waiting For Next Spring

Its getting to cold for me in PA now and I dont think ill be going out again thsi year so im bummed out. So what do you guys do thats fishing related during the off season? I like to look at new gear coming out making a future tackle shopping list and looking for new places to fish and of course visit the forums. I have other hobbies to but, fishing is my main id say.

I like to scout new fishing holes if fuel permits,

Improvements on my poor man boats..,

Improvements on all my gear, rods/ reels/ terminal tackle.

I still sneak a few trips in over the winter regardless, usually rewarding too, many times winter water is drawn down real low- take your camera.

You know, I ***** a lot about the negatives of living in an urban area with 3 million people, an area where being a fisherman is more of an exception than the rule.  Than I read about you guys having to shut it down for the next few months while my only concern is if the water temperature has dropped below 65 degrees this week.  Big whoop for me, I might have to wear a hoodie in the morning because the air temperature is a brisk 55.  I should just shut up, take the negatives of living in Southern California in stride and be thankful that tomorrow when much of the country will be huddled in side, I'll be in shorts & barefoot still catching bass on baits that I don't have to drag around slowly.

I try to buy things I need to replace like line, maybe some lures etc.  Maybe add a new rod and reel to my collection that I need or something other gear.  I have too many hobbies so it's hard to nail down one lol

I do those things too. I also organize all my tackle, and then reorganize it a couple times. Usually put new line on some reels. Last year I also spent way too much money on new gear. And I'll probably do it again this year. In fact, I just found an amazing deal on a reel I've been wanting, so I pulled the trigger on it. Now I need to find a rod to go with it

On the bright side, I was just looking at the forecast. Looks like there is a possibility that we might scrape the 50 degree mark next Thursday, and 46 the following day. I'm clearing my afternoon schedule for those days! I would prefer a few degrees warmer than that. But at this point, I'll take it!!

Re-Organize my Plano boxes

Replace any hooks or split rings that need replaced

Come February or March I'll replace all my line

Pickup any necessary tackle/lures I need

Scour Google to find new places to fish

Walk around the woods and shoot at anything brown with four legs

I winterize the truck (yah, its fishing related to me), clean all of my rods and reels, reorganize tackle, and take an inventory of what I have, compared to the beginning of the year, and only buy exactly what I need.

Wimp.     I found that leather gloves don't seen to inhibit my casting at all.    But you are right.........I'd much prefer to be in Florida at this time of year.

Now that is what I call an Iron Will.  Past couple of years my arsenal has increase dramatically during the winter.  Not that I need anymore, but it may grow a little more this winter as well.

I live in PA and right now is the time!!! I fish the Susquehanna river this time of year, the last couple of weeks have been awesome! I had 50+ day of smallmouths, we got into a migrating school that stopped to feed, water temp was 53 degrees and we clobbered them in one spot one every single cast with square bill cranks. The smallest fish was 16.5", me and my friend Bob tied for the most consecutive cast with a hookup, and that was 14 casts and 14 fish for each of us and then 2 casts with no hits, changed colors and it was back on. Last week it was the Luck-E-Strike RC STX jerkbait in the secret night color, the smaller one was the deal early and then late is was the larger one. Right now you can hit wintering holes and get some real nice ones on hair jigs, trust me, if the water is open here the fish are eating, you just need to know where to go.

I used to do that as well, but I found that my pockets were sore, and most of what I bought was a bunch of crap. I cleared all that out, and started reorganizing. I find my fishing is more enjoyable this way. I still buy deals, but if I don't need it, I wont buy it, even on Salem

We didn't average the fish Dale but it was up there, the smallest was 16.5" and the largest was 21.5" but most were between 18" and 19". Normally you only find those fish in wintering holes fishing slow but if you get lucky enough and get on them as stop during their migration you'll have a day like we had. The fish seem to travel in groups according to size, we got on another school like that but the fish were noticeable smaller with the largest fish going 17" and most in the 12" to 14" range. When the water gets hard I'll still be busy pouring jigs and tying hair jigs so by spring I'll have a box full.
