When you have a whole set of golf clubs, it makes it hard to only take the 5 iron.

The only reasons I can think of to use only one rod would be thus: you only have one rod or you only have room for one rod. (Carrying, etc)

Seems like a lot of people these days fish with seven rods and match a rod with every lure type, not to mention types of line.  Is there any love to those of us who just take "our fishing rod" to fish?

I think you are starting to see a movement toward simplicity for a lot of guys. Many people are looking for more versatile equipment and trying to keep things tighter, so to speak. That's why you'll see companies marketing rods as "all-around" rods. Other guys want to have very specific rod/reel/line combos for every technique, and the collection of the equipment can be as much of a hobby as the actual fishing. Most people on this forum fall somewhere in between. I know I'm at a point where I'm trying to trim my line-up down to the bare necessities. Granted, I'll still have 5 rods on my boat when I get to that point, and they might cost $300 each; but that is my version of keeping it simple. Could I buy one spinning rod and one casting rod and catch just as many fish? I don't know. Would I have just as much fun fishing? Probably. But it gets cold here in the Winter. Shopping for equipment keeps me sane.

Yes he only fishes with one rod & reel. But you failed to mention he has more than a dozen of those outfits aboard his boat at any time.

Who exactly are y'all talking about. You've all peaked my curiosity and I can't take it anymore lol.

When I am bank fishing I only use one outfit. Walking around with more than that is just a pita for me. I take one outfit that can handle multiple applications. When I am on my boat I carry five. Why? ,because they stay next to me the whole time I fish and are convenient to access quickly if needed. I can throw multiple applications that are assigned to specific rods and not have to spend time second guessing decisions.

I fish ONE 7' MH Ugly Stick baitcasting rod and ONE MH Ugly Stick open face rod, and thats all i have ever needed.

I fish with guys that always have nine rods out on the deck and it makes a 21' boat feel like a pond hopper. (And the wonder why rod eyes get crushed fighting fish)

By most accounts RC was a little out there.

He was also way up there too!

I think I gave up on being practical many years ago where fishing is concerned.  I enjoy a little excess wherever I can employ it.

I don't walk much bank but I do like to wade sometimes.  Here, multiple rods are impossible.

Pretty hard for me to disagree.  I have to thank you for wanting my ul outfit that I pretty much forgot I had.  A $30 POS rod with a $30 POS reel using but 1 lure has turned mediocre 3-5# fish into a very exciting experience.  Now I'm looking forward to using this outfit everyday and have no real desire to use anything else.

What about the one that has the boat, the gear, and out fishes you?  You're right, it's not the gear, but that certainly isn't going to hold anyone back either.
