After some rather detailed PM exchanges with a couple friends let me see if I can bring a few things into perspective.

Matt Lures and my discussions go back many years and though they get quite heated we have both kept them quite civil.

I grew up with some of the legends of catching bass, the bass's environment, and bass behavior. The majority of my experience comes from the southern United States; Texas to Florida, the Gulf Coast to Tennessee and with limited experience from Mexico.

Matt also has quite the experienced Bach ground as we'll.

While one might disagree with Matt or with me, that is not important, y'all need to pay close attention to both sides of the discussion!

I may not agree with Matt 100% of the time I do however take his viewpoint and compare it to mine and make the proper adjustments that give me a greater opportunity to catch bass as well as bigger bass.

This does not apply to Matt only but Bobby Uhrig, Paul Roberts, Roger (ROLO), Raul, WRB and many other long time members.

These are the guys I learn from! ;)

And.......?

We all learn from others all the time.

Sometimes it is good; sometimes it is bad; and sometimes it doesn't matter.

The old saying, "Keep Your Eyes and Ears Open and Your Mouth Shut" applies more than we can imagine, especially in bass fishing.

I think I probably learn the most through new members.  Their questions seem basic, fundamental, and sometimes even silly on the surface, but thinking about these building blocks of fishing, and teaching others can lead to self reflection, and remind of areas we probably taske for granted.

Look at all the knot threads.  How about guys that can't seem to fish a jig through weeds?  Why do we use braid?  Why do we use leaders?  When is a crank better than a plastic?

Dovetail that type of sharing with the elevated conversations Catt is talking about, and a lot of these new anglers are going to simply shorten that 90% bell curve of anglers  - the old 10% catch 90% of the fish thing.

Sam, great piece of advice.  This is exactly how I learned 90% of what I do now.  It has been a 40 year process, and I'm still learning. :eyebrows:

It comes down to civility.

It shouldn't "come down" to that level - it's a prerequisite of membership.

From the Forum Rules and FAQs:

Nice perspective ~

Disagreement does not automatically include Disrespect.

Adding it is a choice.

You need civil disagreement to prevent things like the Abilene Paradox and Groupthink, the key word here is Civil.  Once it becomes an argument neither side hears the other and begin to think more about how they are going to respond than digesting what was said.

Incivility is revamped in today's behavior on the internet, in social media and politics. The ability to debate your thoughts without being uncivil leads to compromise and a good learning experience or agreeing to agree to disagree, shake hands and move on.

I have learned lot from Catt, we don't always agree, our experiences maybe similar with a different perspective.

What prompted this public response was some here think there is some type of animosity between Matt and I. Of all the adjectives and adverbs used to describe myself and others arrogant was the mildest.

With the level of experience obtained by some us comes a self confidence that can be misconstrued as arrogant.

For the record, I still want to see you develop confidence with a swimbait. ;)

I agree that some questions seem so obvious. I kinda wonder. Like really do you have to ask that. Or questions where the only answer is to say I don't know just try it. As for a jig in grass that's kind of a valid question. It depends on the grass and how thick it is. Some stuff you cant really do it unless your fishing almost vertically so the only option is to t-rig or a punch skirt if you want the jig profile.

Catt, being somewhat new to these forums, I have read many posts and responses from the long time members.  ALL of you have pro's and con's on your views and experiences.  But that's the best part.  I get to see what point of view from South Eastern fisherman, see the views from the guys out West, up North...etc.  See the discussion that incurs and learn or add points of view or questions that we may view viable to the discussion.  There are times we all get a bit heated in our discussions....we're fisherman and most of us are pretty hard headed. And the good fisherman ALL may come off arragant because of our sef confidence.  But from your list of members, each have their strong points and excel in the way they fish and techiques they use.  ALL of which lend their time to posting and letting us learn bits of knowledge and experience we can take from each member where we are lacking and make us more productive and able to share with others that are up and coming in our great sport.

Sometimes the loudest speaker in the room is he one that says the least. I value what everyone has to say here and have learned a lot. Different points of view are what makes life intresting and inspire people to challenge themselfs and build better mousetraps. I take what I can from each post and try to figure out where it could apply to me. I'll be quiet now.

I actually like the bickering between two perspectives, gives a good comparison to two options that are passionately up for debate which I'll try both.
