I've been using the Spot Remover pro jig heads. I like being able to screw on my lure but it seems like it keeps my plastic in the way of the hookset sometimes. If I added a hitchhiker coil to another jig head, would the ability of the lure to swing out of the way help with my hooksets?

It would be worth a try. I make jigs heads with the hitch hiker molded into them and haven't any trouble with the bait getting in the way of the hookset.

if you attach the HH to the eye of the hook it will move more.  I've seen alot of styles of hooks from frogs, to shakees done like this.  Its easier then molding them in.

Yes it takes the place of the weedguard.  Buy you will need to fill the center with something or lead will fill it.

I make them too, and have never understood the problem with the plastic in the way, if the hook is sharp, there shouldn't be a problem, the worm WILL move!

Me either. Honestly I think its a poor hookset, or balled up plastic on the hook. Add that to the weight on the head and the fish can throw it because the hook isnt set well enough. I've never been a big fan of SR because of the angle that the worm and hook are at with the size of that screw thing that hold them on.  The pro series looks alot nicer.

Well, ain't we a bunch of tackle-makers, blaming the end user ;)

I think the same thing, though, a lot of guys shakey head fish with 6 or 8lb test, you can't do much but give a little pull with that kind of line.

I never really considered my set up. My shakey head setup is a 6'6 ML with 8 fluoro. Also, most of my problems have been with bigger plastics like flukes and lizards, the smaller ones.

I've been putting a little more thought into this.  It might be several combinations leading to this.

Angle of the bait

Rotation of the hook when set

Thickness of plastic

Does the fish actually have the head in its mouth or just behind the hook

Rod combo.

What does help is leaving a bit of the hook point exposed.  Might hang more but you will lose less fish.

here are 2 I made.  I love the top one because of the angle of the hook in relationship to the line.  I have yet to miss a fish.  Havent caught a ton on it but alot better then the bottom one.  The top one stands free for the most part, pulls through weeds nice and the widegap just rocks.  The bottom one just doesnt hold the worm right imo. I havent had much success on it either. I quit making them for this reason.  IMO its a useless jig head.

Na, sometimes we just notice little things that make a bait just a bit better because of making tackle.  Not saying fisherman/non tackle makers dont notice either,  just we might be a bit pickier. I'm pretty picky when it comes to some of the ideas.  I dont like casting and missing the fish when I set a hook.  Lots of R&D time.  I hope that came out right and understandable.

I have noticed when I go to a tackle shop and look around I'm not looking for baits anymore.  I look at designs and colors.  I put alot of thought in some of my designs not as much as some.   Using angles, weight, head design, color, etc.  Lots of thought goes into some of the simplest looking things.

Alot of time this year has been spent making up some concept lures.  On the water and at the house.  Results I've had are some horrible ones and some brilliant ones.

GMan...my first thought about my problem was that I needed a shakey head with a wide gap hook. If you don't mind me asking what mold did you use?

poisen tail jig mold.  Best overall jig mold I have found so far.  I dont mess with putting fancy eyes in them though.

GMan, are you employed by the Bait Monkey?  Barlow's got into my pocket today for $97.00 and change but I have a Posion Tail mold, 200 2/0 & 3/0 hooks, 200 Hitchikers on the way.  I had been doing fine on my ball head Shakey rig but couldn't stand it.  I now own 27 lead molds.  26 on the pegboard and an empty slot for the Posion Tail.    ;D ;D ;D

I use a Do-It-Molds 1/8 ball jig and it works fine they make all kinds just need to alter it with a grinder and JB wield if you want to do away with the collar.

Here are mine

Another way yo get rid of the collar is to slide a rubber skirt collar around the hook while you pour it and slide it up to where you want the collar of lead to stop. The rubber is reuseable and you don't have to alter your mold.

I am the tackle making junky.  LOL,  That poison is awsome.   best jig I've ever used.  Just wish they made it without the eyes and gill plates.  I have no use for that.

Harshman is right on when he said use a skirt collar to cut the barb off.  It works great.  I have found though on some jig head styles if you cut to much the head becomes kind of loose.  Probably never make a difference.

Regardless of the spring being molded in the head or free swinging, once you screw your bait on and hook it onto the hook, it wont move.  If you think about it, the hook locks the worm into place and it would take a force strong enough to stretch the head of the soft plastic for it to move up higher on the hook eye.

As far as the plastic impeding your hookset, I dont think the spring does anything.  My favorite jighead is the Picasso Shakedown and that has a titanium spring.  It has never afftected hooksets.  If your missing fish with the Spot Remover, it's either because your setting the hook wrong or the fish is small.

hope this helps

I don't like the spring being that close to my line tie. I'm sure it want get into the way but why chance it. Also with the worm coming right off the ball jig and not sticking up above you get less grass and weeds on it and less chance of hanging up.
