Hi,

 

I have bought a 2010 Ranger 520 (new to me!) and took it out for the first time today.   I have a Yamaha Vmax 250 2nd series on it.

 

I let it warm up for about 2-3 minutes and then tried to take off.   When I tried to take off the engine kept going dead as if it had a safety switch on it or something.  It would idle just fine, but would go dead when I gave it gas.  After going dead about 10 times, it finally stayed running and there was no problems at all.   I turned it off several times after that and acted appropriately when accelerating from idle.  In fact, the thing ran really, really good once I got going.  

 

Does anyone know what the initial engine turning off was all about?  Was it not warmed up enough?  Maybe had the trim set wrong?  I'm not sure what it was, but it scared the heck out of me.  I'm glad it cranked and ran well afterwards.

If it was an old carbureted engine (like mine) I would say it got loaded up while it was idling.  Pretty sure it could not be anything with the trim.  Try not warming it up so long.

 First welcome to the forums and second, How long had the motor been sitting when you bought it? Did you test drive before you bought it?

As Andrew is suggesting, could the gas have gotten old? Maybe just running it is all it needed. Congrats on your purchase.

If you got a hot foot, make sure the shift lever is pushed fully forward.  This will engage a micro switch that gives you full power.

If it had been sitting for a while before you got it, the gas in the line could have went bad, especially if it had ethanol in it.  Congrats on the new rig though!

Thanks for the reply fellas!   It appears to have been a little water in the lines.  You guys were right.  I serviced the boat and now it seems to be running just fine.

Might want to swap out the fuel/water separator, since it had water in the lines. Also, I've got a 150 vmax and it's real bad with ethanol. Really suffers performance wise --- really tough to crank, lower top speed, will die often. Stickin' to the non ethanol.

Could be several things, here are the top 3:

 

1. Old gas

2. Old fuel lines/air getting into the fuel as it goes into the engine. Did you prime your bulb before you put in and started the motor? (Replace your main fuel line and bulb)

3. Gunk in the carbs- Run some Seafoam through your engine, it's just a gas additive, about $10/can
