Braid Fishermen, Do You Ever Go Back To Mono?

I'll use braid for almost everything, but if I'm throwing a squarebill I'll use mono.

Like most of you there was a time when it was mono and nothing else, so that is what we used.

Now since we have all these different choices of lines to go with all the different types of presentations, useing all different rod lengths, actions, materials etc. etc. etc. It's enough to make a guy goofy.

Eventually we all find what works for our waters, our equipment and our level of ability.

For me...

It's braid for anything in the weeds.

Floro for anything on the bottom.

Co Poly for moving baits.

Am I doing it right? Do I have the right rod with the right line? Tyed to the right lure? Throwing in the right place?

Hell, I don't know but I like to think so.

  I don't need to worry about going back to mono, I never left.  I use braid on my heavy cover/slop rods, all else is Trilene XT mono.

The only thing I use mono for is backing and as a leader for topwater.  I use braid w/ fluoro leaders for almost everything and straight fluoro for everything else.  I don't care for the stretch and want to maximize the sensitivity of the rods by using braid and fluoro.  Mono just doesn't do it for me.

I started off cranking with flouro since that was the "text book" line. Using a true cranking rod I just couldn't get used to the feel although I understood the reason for flouro and moderate cranking rods. This year I switched to using braid and wow I will never go back. I can feel the crank and almost everything it touches, even vegetation. My lipless crank/square bill setup I have confidence in now ripping out of grass with braid. I have noticed losing more fish on braid. I hope the rod will dictate that aspect of it.

 

Of all my setups none has mono, one has flouro, 2 have braid with a flouro leader, and the rest are straight braid.

Every reel I own now has braid and I either fish a FC topshot or Mono depending on what I'm doing and using.  As far as loosing more fish on braid.....that would be due to "user error".  If you don't have the stretch in braid, you have to back off your drag and look into fishing slightly softer rods as so the hooks don't pull.  Have to have a bit of "shock absorbsion" between you and the fish.  If it isn't the stretch of mono, then you must reduce the drag as well as possibly using a softer rod. Great thing about baitcasters, increasing the drag is as simple as some thumb pressure on the spool.  The softer drag wil help eliminate pulling fish off the hook if it's set right.
