Medium Action Rod?

I followed roadwarrior's advice, sort of, and now have a 7' MHF and a 7'2" MM baitcaster and a 7' MF spinning rod. I use the MHF mostly for spinnerbaits and general purpose and the MM for cranking treble hook lures. The spinning rod, when finished, will be for worms, senkos, and smaller treble lures. So far, so good, right?

I have a chance to get another 7'2" baitcaster in either MHM or another MM. I'd like to add a rod for jigs and/or swim baits. Most of the discussion on these forums suggest either MHF or MF for these applications. I'm thinking I can use my MHF for this and the new MHM for spinnerbaits. Or should I wait until I find another MHF?

The MHF is SC Avid. The MM is a rod I built on a SCV blank. It's my first build and I like it a lot. That's why I'm thinking of another one. The new one would also be a SCV blank that is on sale. And I'm new to this, but I suspect these sales come along fairly regularly.

So, should I buy or wait? I know it's a personal decision based on preference, but I want a rod I can use and not just look pretty in the corner.

What's your goal, to make the arsenal more technique specific or to have extra rods tied up during the outings? The SCV is a lighter and more sensitive blank than the SCIII (Avid) but the applications are pretty much identical. If you want a second MH/F I'd leave the spinners, swim jigs etc. on the Avid and fish T-rigs and jigs on the SCV. Depending on where and how you fish, you may want to add a Heavy flippin stick, ML/XF drop shot/finesse rod or maybe a top water rod or a swimbait/ A-rig rod.

I guess I could have just asked is a MHM rod ok for spinnerbaits? I get the impression that fast action is best for all single hook applications but I read an article on rods that suggested that medium action is best for spinnerbaits. It was something about how deep the bass took the hook.

Of course my real goal is to buy another SCV rod blank and this one is on sale. ;-)

Some guys like a Mod action spinner bait rod, personally I don't. I don't buy the theory of needing a slower action to avoid pulling the hook away. Chances are more likely that the fish took and spit your bait before you even knew it. Do a little bed fishing and you'll see right away how unbelievably fast a fish can take, move, and spit a bait without you feeling a thing. I fish spinner baits a lot like a jig and like the fast action for setting the heavy hook quickly. If you've got a good line on a clearance blank, there isn't a much more versatile power/action for bass fishing than a MH/F. You could always replace the Avid with the new one and sell the Avid for money for yet another build.

The MH/F isn't on sale. Just the MH/M and the M/M.

The MH/M would be good if you want to throw bigger, deeper running cranks but wouldn't be my first choice for either of applications you want to fill. The nice thing about custom rods is getting exactly what you want. I won't compromise much if at all on the blank regardless of the deal.

I have numerous St Croix MHM in Avids & legend extremes and love that blank for all treble hook baits. It will alo do a good job for frogs & small swim baits.

Splitting hairs. Unless you're fishing something like Lake Okeechobee in Florida, you do not need MHF rods.  Stay light and go with a classic like Cablea's Fish Eagle medium action rod six foot with fast action and start catching fish.

I live complete other side of the country north of Okeechobee, I still flip, pitch, punch, and frog. Try punching with a 6' medium action and see how few hooks you bury.

There are plenty of uses for a medium heavy or heavy action rods.

You may be on the other side of the country but it's still like lake Okeechobee Florida.

Confusing the terms. I think you're both talking about medium, medium heavy, and heavy POWER rods and you both seem to be advocating fast ACTION. Am I wrong?

Yes you're right. Even as much as I have explained it to people I still say action when describing power sometimes.
