Has anyone had any success off of the snag proof original frog?  I just lost one today, don't ask...  lol  I was going to get another one, if they work...  I hear a lot about people catching big bass off of them, but I have yet to see one...  Anyone have any stories to tell about it?

I've used one for quite a while now and like it. I guess you have to take that with a grain of salt because I've not used any of the other type of frogs. Can't seem to get it to walk like like the bronzeye.

I started a thread on this a while ago. Do a search for it, it's worth it!

Yeah.  I haven't used any other, either.  I got an original frog on easter from my beautiful fiance, along with some other lures.  Yesterday I let her cast it several times, and she shoots it across a 20 foot canal, and hits the trees on the other side, I get it out.  I move to a little cuvy behind us, and she casts, and the wind carries it into a tree!  NICE!  I begin to wonder if it was, "too light".  Anyhow, long story short, it's still there!  lol  Snag proof my backside!  I will get it back, or I won't, it doesn't matter.

I have heard that after a few catches, the frogs actually come apart at the seams?  If this is true, why haven't they made the frog a little thicker, and more prone to ripping?  I was thinking about making my own body out of a nice block of balsa, and finding something to make the legs with, that would/could be replaceable.  I really hate losing a lure, but I really hate having it come back tattered from a fish!  Also, I have heard that they are really hard to catch fish on, as the hooks are set so far forward?  I would assume, that it was, nothing more than, fisherman error...  I think the rule is, "count 3, set the hook"?

If you're looking for a lure that "walks", then you might be happier with a Boze ZZ Walker or a Snag Proof Weed Demon.

Both are tail-weighted topwaters that walk like a champ!

But if you're looking for a twitchbait, than I think you're going to be real happy.

The snag proof frog I like the best is the pro-series frog that uses a double Owner hook. Instead of elaborating on the retrieve,

it would be easier to put it this way: Work the snag-proof frog like a twitchbait, the same as you'd work the Rapala Original Floater.

There are two big differences of course. You can pitch the snag proof frog where you can't pitch the floating rapala.

Also, it's important to delay the hook-set a second or two, otherwise you might find yourself ducking the flying frog ;D

Thanks for the info!  I appreciate it!  I am working on a couple top floaters right as we speak.  I am carving myself a popper, and a rapala style floater.  ;)  Next is the frog...  :D  I will have to look into more soft frogs, it sounds like they work, you just have to know what you are doing!  :)  Awesome info, thank you very much!

I have been using the snag-proof since they come out eons ago and never had one split. Once in a while a hook will poke a hole in the body and I just silicone it up :D

I drag them through the toughest cover in the US (FL Swamps) & have caught plenty of monster bass on them and still have one rigged on one of my rods all of the time.

The other frogs I have tried work to some degree but are way too heavy for most situations I fish.

Go retrieve your bait and practice using it a little. You won't regret it.

Yeah, I want to get out and get my lure back...  I hate having things in trees, but there is always a way to get it back...    I guess it's what I get for letting the GF cast my pole...  I thought it was all cute, until she let it go too soon, and it went the opposite direction... lol  Oh well, it's only a few dollars, if I don't get it back!  I think I will though...  Just need to use the old walnut shaker...  :D  I mean its like maybe 10 feet high on the tree, and like 3 feet over the water, and barely hanging on...  I think I can get it back!

I am a victim of this bait. I used to use the Original Snag Proof frog, until I discovered the scumfrog/bronzeye frog. I had tons of hits on the Original snag proof but missed 75% of them. And yes I didn't set the hook immediately, I'd give the fish a good amount of time with the bait and still miss the fish on the hookset. I believe this frog is too hard bodied in my opinion and the hooks aren't placed right nor are they sharp. Thats just my opinion but I'll stand by it. I will never use one of these frogs again. I missed just too many fish on this frog... way too many. Try the scumfrog, its alot softer and IMHO it has by far alot better hook up ratio then the Original Snag Proof. Lets see how long you will say "ah it had to be a coincidence that I missed the fish, it couldn't have been the bait" before going into a crazed rage flipping out. Because for me it took about 12-18 hits before I finally went screwy.

Yeah, I only had one really large fish swirl it, then was spooked off by a boat slowly drifting its way back into the canal...  I swear, it's irritating, having an almost hit, and someone ruins it!  I think I just need to hit the boat more...  Shore fishing is irritating, and I don't have the patience for it!  lol  Thanks for the info.  I don't plan on getting another, unless it's one of the ones you, or someone else suggested!  I don't want to miss fish, as I catch so few lately!

I really like throwing the snag proof into situations where you don't really have enough room for walk the dog retrieve or on top of vegetation where you can't. Used the same one for years (really) and never had the problem of "coming apart at the seams". After having it that long I think if it was it would have. Will admit to having hung one up and lost it. Hung it on a small willow (18" or so). The line wrapped around and the lure pulled up the side, putting the hooks in line to hang :'(. That's the only way I've ever hung one.

That thread I wrote about earlier, most of the guys said the hook-up ratio to hits was kind of dismal on all the soft bodied frogs. Hope this helps instead of mudding the waters.

BTW Make sure and hold on to that lady that buys you fishing lures that are actually worth throwing :D

Thanks skillet.  You did the same thing with your frog as me then...  That is an irritating flaw...  I should write them a letter and tell them they lie, it's not snagproof...  lol  Horrible design.  But I would assume that every lure is about the same, in different conditions.  I am designing my own plastics for a while, and see if I can't produce me a frog that will be cheaper, and easier for me to use...  I think I have the idea set in clay, I just need to make the molds, and pour the plastic, which I don't have yet...  Might just melt some old worms down, and use those...

Don't get me wrong. I guess it's like most baits, stay within it's limits and it's a really good bait! Would like to try the one Rolo mentioned one day.

Let us know how your frog turns out...

wickyman,

BTW I thought I was probably the only one on the forums that could lose a "snag proof" bait ;D

Yeah, it happens.  I am a clutz when removing mistakes that other people made...  I would make a bad hitman...  lol  The GF tossed the thing, it hits the tree, and lands on the other side, on land.  Rather than walking over there, and breaking it off, I tried to yank it through the tree.... I wasn't fast enough, and it wrapped around the hook, and branch...  DOH!  You know how it is...  :D  We should start an, "I lost a snagproof lure in a tree!" club!  lol

I don't like that they don't snag the fish in the mouth....  But you can't have everything...  lol  The new frog by snagproof looks like it might work a little better, as it has trailing legs, rather than the plastic molded legs...  It might actually, allow the fish to grab on better...  I would like to see that...  I am going to be making my own frogs, which will be about half as thick, and allow the fish to bite down...  We'll see...  I am not sure how I am going to even get it to work, but I got time...  :D

Snag proof make a great frog, it' called "Bobbys Perfect Frog", it's a little more $$ than the orginal frog, $7 a pop, but they are incredably durable, and my hook up % with this frog is very high.......I dare say over 75%,
