Iv'e never tried the pro max. I really like the black max. Good cheap reel. Also you can never go wrong with a BPS PQ

Why not save up, and grab a $100 reel on the used market for just a little more than what you're willing to spend on a low, low end reel?

I'd also be careful with these auctions - many "new" items not in packages are defective returns.  They get auctioned off in huge lots, and then resold through outlets such as eBay.

Are those still being made? I remember back in the day that the talk on this forum about the Smoke was that on paper, it should be a very good reel, but in real life, it just didn't live up to the hype.

You probably heard it from me, lol.  I wasn't terribly impressed with the early release, 1st run 100 and 150 models, but there have been enough contrasting reviews to dismiss that as anecdotal.

I was unaware they made $30 baitcasting reels haha

I'm with Francho. Save up $100 and get something like a Diawa Lexa or a Lews Speed Spool. Those are both decent reels for around $100. Or you could also look into some of the Bass Pro reels. They have a few models in the $70-100 range.

I'd buy a BPS reel in that price range.  More bang for the buck.

Say you are what ? ..... "so eager to put another set together" ......  let´s see, Mr Herefishy is located  in ...... MAINE ! that´s far up North if I´m not wrong and we are in .....lemme see the calendar ..... the first week of November .....don´t see no point in putting anothet set up together when you´re about to get frozen for the next 6 months which are btw, plenty of months to save and get yourself a better reel.

If you were located somewhere like where you can fish year round ..... sorry but ya know, just gotta rub it. :laugh5:

The Promax was my first baitcaster. It is a very decent reel for the price. I also picked up a used pro qualifier for $60 and that reel was better than the promax.

I know we're all tight on money but I'm pretty sure if you have that much passion in fishing, judging my your posts, youll end up selling the max series for something better. Try to jump up to the 75 range if you can for a used citica E or a pro Qualifier.

A quick Google search with the words Quantum Smoke Bass Resource brings up a Quantum Smoke Thread from 2011 that you participated in. LOL

While I primarily use Shimano reels, I have a few outcasts from the bunch including my Smoke below. I added the 102mm Swept handle from Hawgtech and the Septon knobs.  I have not had any issues with my reel going over 3 season with it now.  Mine has been a solid reel, but I would probably still opt for a Shimano before buying another smoke.  My issue with the smoke is the brakes are insanely touchy to adjust, which is why I've opted to use this as a punching/heavy flipping reel on my Dobyns 766c.

Sounds like being in Maine, you don't have time to wait if you want to fish this season, but there might be some "Black Friday" sales just a little over 3 weeks away. Even if you just need something to hold you over for a few weeks, you might as well buy something you are going to continue using into next season, if you can afford it. I know that it's easy for the rest of us to spend your money, but the $30-$40 you spend on a cheap reel would go a long way toward one of other quality models guys have mentioned. I bought a cheap reel once to put on a rod they gave me at a tournament because I just couldn't wait. I ended up barely using the rod anyway because I couldn't stand the reel. I wished I would have saved that money for the permanent reel I knew I'd end up buying later.

I've had the black max and pro max both good reels pro max is better haven't used it for a while though lost the spool tension cap! Can't cast it without backlashing! But it does cast far and is fairly smooth. 4.5 out of 5 stars for the price.

I'll tell you one thing, if you were to get the orra2 sx, many of the internals can be swapped with the gen 3revo series: s, sx, stx, and premier (pretty much any of the models with the 27mm width spools).  I can tell you that I serviced my friends orra2 sx, and am able to confirm that my Premier spool (you'd need to get the pinion shaft too) and sideplate fit (it'll fit the same size bearing housings as well).  Shoot, you might even be able to fit an mgx or mgxtreme gear set into it.  Anyways, to make a long story short, the orra2 sx isn't a bad start.  There's potential in making that into a rocket-powered, shelf queen if you wanted too.

I can get into way more detail if you want to pm later.  I've even got Lew's parts on my revos.
