bassboy107 Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 I am looking to get into crankbait fishing more, and I'm looking to get a new rod over the winter for it. I don't have the money to get more than one rod for different size crankbaits, so I am looking for a rod that I can throw things like lipless cranks to square bills to deeper diving ( nothing over 10' really). What I am wondering is if I can get a rod to throw all of these things on. My max I can spend would be $120-130. Any suggestions? Thanks! Quote
masterbass Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 That's plenty of money to get a good crankbait rod. Do you want glass or graphite? Quote

timsford Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 What kind of cover do you fish? I like composite rods for most cranks except deep divers and use fiberglass for those. There are no weeds in the lakes near me though, only rocks and wood. If you fish a lot of weeds you may want to go with graphite or composite to rip baits free from weeds Quote

timsford Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Id go with a good graphite rod then if you are planning to use mono or fluoro and a composite or fiberglass rod if you use braid. A mh rod around 7 ft should be a pretty versatile rod. There are a lot of good cranking rods for that price or less. For graphite id look at the st croix premier or daiwa tatula regular action(retails for 150 but can be found for less with some internet searching). For a composite rod id search around, my favorite is seeker but its a little out of your price range. The bps crankin sticks are great and cheaper than what you want to spend. If you go with fiberglass there are a ton of choices. Ones ive tried and liked personally are the powell deisel and max, and the lews david fritts rods with the foam handle. The best thing to do is go to a bass pro or somewhere you can mount your reel on the rods and see how they balance and whats comfortable to you. What one person thinks is the best may be completely different than what you like Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 10' more of a med depth, so for those particular cranking apps I'd look for a 7' Med or MH graphite Mod/fast action rod. 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 St. Croix Premier, 7' MH-Mod. Fits your needs and price. 2 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 A 7' MH/ Mod/Fast action is a very good choice for what you want to fish with, both bait size & cover type. Quote
bass1980 Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 I'd go for a 7' MHM rof for an all around crank rod. It'll be stout enough to fish square bill around wood. It'll also be stout enough to use for up to 5/8 oz cranks. Ripping lipless cranks out of weeds/grass you can do as well. Slightly out of your range but I use a Gloomis GL2 7'MHM rod. I don't crank enough so I only needed one rod and this one seems to do many things well. I hateD the GL2 jig n worm rod but kept the crank rod as the handle is nice and it does the job. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 I would use a graphite rod around 7 foot , MH /MF the MF action will help with pulling lipless baits through the grass and when using a squarebill. I agree with many here the St Croix Premier crankbait rods are a good choice in your price range. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 St. Croix Premier, 7' MH-Mod. Fits your needs and price. x2 on this! The graphite will make for an overall lighter stick as well as better sensitivity as well. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 St. Croix Premier, 7' MH-Mod. Fits your needs and price. Out of the six or seven rods I use for cranking, that would be my answer as well. I use the Avid, but the blanks are similar. Also handles hard swimbaits to just under an ounce. Quote
Super User Sam Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 Bass Pro Shops Cranking Stick. Excellent for the money. Quote
DFrench97 Posted November 4, 2014 Posted November 4, 2014 Premier is nice. I have the 7' M for shallow - medium cranks. Very light and sensitive. Quote

Super User J Francho Posted November 4, 2014 Super User Posted November 4, 2014 Probably, but I like the MM for that size. Quote
bass1980 Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 1.5'S at 3/8 oz isn't really a small crank. If you have a good reel you should be able to cast it. Maybe not as far as a MM but still good.Since I don't throw deep divers I paired my GL2 MHM with a chronarch 51e. Many people would think that reel is a bad choice but I love it. I use 20lb braid so I'm able to get plenty of lines. The 51e is able to cast even shad raps #5 which is a very small crank. I was amazed and so glad I made the switch. Before I had trouble loading 1.5s with this rod with a T3 1016 and a Ci4+, which are great casters but it must have been the rod. Then I switched to the 51e and wow! Then I dropped even lower to shad raps and more wow. BTW I use braid because I can rip cranks out of grass easier and sensitivity is so much better. Sorry I went off track a bit. Quote
bass raider Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 of course i'm biased now having tried the endurance but I've never tried a diesel or inferno but have heard good things about them.(i know that really isn't helpful)Lol.diesel model: 705cb.inferno model:6104cb or 705cb.i HAVE tried cherrywoods&halos &they both have a nice parabolic bend for cranks. oh and cant forget about the browning silaflex. I've tried it too. Quote
basstamer Posted November 5, 2014 Posted November 5, 2014 The best choice in an inexpensive rod is a Wright and McGill Skeet Reese Crankbait Rod period. It's limber and will throw a crank a mile. Brand new the are like $80.00-eBay is even cheaper. I've had many different rods and this is a quality rod that easily replaced it's more expensive counterparts. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted November 6, 2014 Super User Posted November 6, 2014 With the mh, would i be able to throw squarebills down to 1.5 size? It won't do it as well as the M/M but will still handle it just fine. Quote
fisherrw Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 get a phenix brown or red crank... you wont be disappointing!!!! Quote
Super User Montanaro Posted November 6, 2014 Super User Posted November 6, 2014 Okuma tcs is well within your budget Quote
aprestonSEK Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 The Abu Garcia Veritas Winch series 7' Medium would be in your price range. $100 Quote
