Considering heading south for that week. I won't be dragging the boat. I would be looking for a charter or guide for 1 maybe 2 days , fresh or saltwater doesn't matter. Wifey would need to sight see as well. I'm thinking FL or TX. She has mentioned Myrtle Beach in the past. Any specific locations in these states I should look at? She likes the Tampa St. Pete area and I have relatives in Austin I could visit. Any other states I should look at. It will be nice to get away from another Chicago winter for a week.

Its not that different then Chicago. Its just colder at night. More of a reason for you, and the old lady to snuggle in bed. Plus with all the trees. The wind chill is not that bad.

Which is exactly why I wouldn't call it a vacation. I'd much rather visit RLR in California or Raul in Mexico. Dare I say Raider

I would call it a vacation. Were else could you see a pasty Irish-German man? Rocking a leopard banana hammock during the winter.

As for the other places. Lets see Mexico form what I hear is nice. Still way to munch drug cartel violence. For me to even think about going there. Unless you bring Raider as a body guard. Speaking of him. If you show her his post. She would veto that right away. Then you have Redline. You know if you exposed the old lady to what he has. That could turn ugly for you.

As for a real vacation. My heart would tell me FL. Some time in march. It has bike week at Daytona. Then a 12 hour race at sebring. Throw in some fishing. That would make a excellent vacation for me.

I would not recommend South Florida for several reasons.  The population swells, just driving around isn't easy.  Accommodations get very pricey during "season", fishing slows down at least the saltwater bite does.  It is a good time for sailfish but the water gets pretty rough in the winter and charters are expensive.  Florida is not the tropics, there is no guarantee that the weather will be hot, although it will be warmer than Chicago.  I love Florida in the summer and fall, good fishing and hot weather, I don't like the winters here, had it not been for my wife I'd be living elsewhere.

The saying that the further south you go the more north it gets is quite true.

If you were talking 2015 I would suggest San Diego. Our biggest lake, that has been closed for going on 6 years will reopen.  Should be epic!  Supposed to open 11/15.  We'll see.

Tampa and St. Pete. ain't the greatest bass fishing area. Now if you want some winter trout then thats a good spot as any.

But plan on traveling to lakeland or orlando area to get into good bass. You looking to haul the lund or hire a guide? And like snook said, weather is variable. end of Dec. ain't too cold but you could be highs of 50s or 70s you don't know. I don't know about texas except its full of steers and..............some big bass lakes these days so I hear

Having just got back a bit ago from Hilton Head south carolina I would be tempted to go back and do some saltwater fishing if I could.  Quite a bit to see and do and pretty relaxing place.  Great food in the area and I hear fishing can be decent.  We did a lot of golfing as thats my wifes passion so I play once in awhile....but would love to fish some salt around here and then eat em.

If I had relatives in Austin I wouldn't think it too much, Austin is the right place to go cuz ......... just a little suspense ...... CHOKE CANYON Reservoir is close to Austin and that place is fantastic ! Just remember, you need macho gear for that place, it's choked with mesquite and palo verde.

Before any plans are made I would check out average seasonal weather, not that is a guarantee.  I've been to Myrtle Beach in April, mid 40's every morning but nice in the afternoon.  Been to Cancun over xmas, hit a bad week and temps weren't much more than 60-65 degrees, same thing happen in Cabo, you just never know about the weather.

If you stop in south Carolina you can stop in beafourt and get a good charter to catch many a variety of fish in the salt water and some excellent red fishing there even though the bite slows down a bit but it will be in the 30's by then.  Me and my dad go ourselves and have a good catch regular but I can imagine a charter will have it good.  But you cant beat the islamorad in florida.  Im going there for my honeymoon in june.  Its just a good excuse for me to try out some fishing down there   :respect-059:

Florida by far.

Myrtle Beach may not have all stores open and it can get cold and windy during the winter along the Atlantic coast.

Also, better fishing in Florida for both fresh and salt water species.

Another good bet is to head to New Orleans and hit the marshes for bass and redfish.

Redfish fishing in the Louisiana marsh is fantastic.

And the wife can hit the French Quarter and tell you what she sees when you get back from fishing.

I bet her French Quarter stories will be more exciting than your fishing stories!!!!

Austin is not bad that time of year. It might get cold but it doesn't last long. Then it warms up again. Good food, places to visit/sight see and several bass fishing options. You could spend a week eating at some of the famous BBQ joints.

A power plant lake 90 miles east of Austin is great in the winter for numbers of fish 3-5 lbs. If the weather is stable, Lake Austin itself yields 10 pounders + in winter.

Any of these within a couple hour drive of Austin?

I've been to Austin a few times although it's been a number of years. I'm sure she could find plenty to do. She enjoyed the river walk in San Antonio last time we were there.

Which one are they reopening? May have to go check that out even though I rarely go that far but it may be worth it.

San Vicente.  They raised the Dam 100'.  It was the best lake around these parts before they closed it.  Can you say "World Record Bass?"

Lake Baccarac would be my choice.

If you came to CA I have a bass pond in my backyard.  Sold the boat a couple years back.  I've been thinking of buying another but haven't had a whole lot of time to fish lately.

Austin is fine if you're under 30 years old

Rayburn & Toledo are 30 minutes apart but several hours from Austin. For your wife to really enjoy herself & the odds of you catching a double digit Hawg I would go to Dallas/Fort Worth & Fork!

Your next problem will be booking with Tom Redington who maybe booked up.
