I fish because I like the hobby, not for any

sort of competition whatsoever.

It is about being outside and being rewarded

for my efforts with a fish on the end of my line.

I love to hunt and since you can not see your prey fishing is the ultimate hunt!  ;)

Very true, getting a bite is exciting when you can't see what's down there.

Same. I've never fished a tournament because to me fishing should be calm and stress free.

I'd have to say it's for the challenge mostly. And I also work a lot so it's nice to just be able to wind down for a little bit and forget about everything. Just me and the fish so to speak.

Very relaxing for me and it gives me something to do outside besides yardwork.

I don't golf, I don't hunt, I don't drink or hang out in bars.  I don't chase women(my wife is more than enough for me), I'm not really involved in church activities.  I work very hard and a lot.  I love my family and I take care of my business.....and I fish.  I don't spend a fortune on it (although I have the bait monkey, too).  My fishing time usually goes like this........When I get there and start, my mind is on work, chores, problems, anything but fishing.  After a few minutes, my mind starts to engage with fishing.  Figuring out what bait to use, where to cast, fiddling with my tackle, etc.  Very soon, time slows down and I'm fully engaged.  No work, no cell phones (it goes OFF when I fish and my family knows that), no nothing but me, the bass, and the great outdoors.  There might be an eagle flying around in the sunshine or it might be raining....I don't care.  I'm outside doing what I love to do.  I don't fish competitively and I'm usually alone.  The only person I'd really want to go fishing with passed away in 2010.  Fishing is MY time.  It keeps me sane

First, why I don't fish:

  • Fillets
  • Money

Second, why I fish:

  • Nature + me + quality time with friends
  • Stress reliever
  • Big bite fever
  • It's in the blood.

Doesn't anyone fish to get away from their wife and kids anymore? Lol! Just kidding. I fish to relax and to be with family and friends. There's a whole different perspective being on the water that only fishermen will value.

I spend a lot of time fishing with the ol lady and kid. Now that it's cold I get to fish alone :respect-059:

Because it is what i do, i love the rush of stickin a fish that i tricked...that i absolutely love being on the water...the only problem i have with bass fishing is the lack of the "salt" smell

I dont know why i fish, but i do, and i am obsessed! Its something that i have tried to explain to others but i just cant. Its prepping the gear, researching the conditons, knowing the prey, learning the techniques, and anticipating a bite. When the line is tight and my pole is bent over on itself, the world is right and it all makes sense. Knowing that no matter how much i have or learn there will always be something else i can work on. I dont know why i fish but its who i am.

I fish because it's part of my court-ordered anger management program.

Wow there's some cool answers to this question. I just started fishing and it's the best decision I've ever made. I don't drink or do much except work so it gets me outdoors when I usually would be watching tv. Yesterday I caught 4 fish in an hour and I was freezing my butt off. Now that's something I would never have thought I would do except I'm completely hooked on bass fishing. It's all I can think about.

It's fun to be enthused (obsessed?) with a new hobby!  Enjoy!

I fish because the fish pull me.

I don't care if its a 8" bluegill on my ultra light, a 30lb king on a surf rod, or anything in between. It's all about the feeling of the fight.
