nocellcontracts Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 Trying to decide between a Champion 733c or 734c. I have a 733 and did some casting yesterday with a 3/8oz booyah. It loaded up quite a bit since that rod is pretty soft. Cast good. Just wondering if I really need to go with the 734 or not. If I ever wanna throw 1/2 or 3/4 spinnerbaits, the 733 may be too soft. What say u? Quote
bmlum415 Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I use a champ 733 for spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, and chatterbaits. Tried many others in the dobyns champ series and settled on the 733. To me its the perfect rod. Its not too soft for 1/2 or 3/4 oz baits to me. 1 Quote
Arv Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I used a DX744 for 3/8 and 1/2oz spinnerbaits and i thought it handled them just fine. Everything I hear about the 733 though, that should be OK too. Either way, I don't think you can go wrong. And who doesn't need more rods, right? 1 Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 If it is a spinnerbait only rod the Savvy 734 is a good rod that weight range and any type of cover. This is what I use mine for as well as smaller soft body swimbaits and occasionally a swim jig. 2 Quote
nocellcontracts Posted October 31, 2014 Author Posted October 31, 2014 Thanks for the input guys. I want to stick with the champion line and keep em matching. 1 Quote
Grantman83 Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 734 is what I use. Got another on the way lol 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 I used a DX744 for 3/8 and 1/2oz spinnerbaits and i thought it handled them just fine Have the same rod, and I'm just "meh" on the spinnerbaits up to 1/2 oz. There's better spinnerbait rods out there, but it works fine. Might be that 7-4 is just too long for me. It didn't load up like my prefered 6-8 MXF Saint Croixs. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I'm a fan of the 705CBGlass for spinnerbaits. I like glass for all moving baits though, unlike most. 1 Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 The 734 would be the your best option. I don't have an issue throwing 3/8oz spinnerbaits on the 733 but I have no idea how some people like the 733 for 1/2+. 1 Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 I prefer the 734C for anything above 3/8. Quote
nocellcontracts Posted November 1, 2014 Author Posted November 1, 2014 Oh I forgot to mention....this will also double as a ½ oz ratl trap rod. Quote
DTack Posted November 2, 2014 Posted November 2, 2014 734c for a champion. For a DX the 744 loads up just fine on fish from 3-8.5 lbs, dunno about anything else. Quote
BasshunterJGH Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 In your opinion what is the perfect dobyns for 3/8-1/2 ounce spinnerbaits? Do you prefer the champion, cranking, glass, or extreme? Which model? Quote
CTGalloway21 Posted February 7, 2015 Posted February 7, 2015 734C. I use my 733C for flukes and senkos. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted February 7, 2015 Super User Posted February 7, 2015 I really like the Savy 734 for those weights. The rating of Heavy is generous for this rod but the reserve power is there. I just dont get the need for a most sensitive or more expensive rod if it will be a rod only used for spinnerbaits. There is a rod within each of the Dobyns line that fish spinnerbaits but since trying the Savy 734 I havent felt the need to go higher up the ladder. It is also a good rod for chatteraits, swimjigs, smaller paddle tail swimbaits. Quote

For me PERSONALLY money not an issue I like the extreme 744dx... I really only throw a 1/2 oz... Throwing the 3/8 into the mix I would go with the 734c champion the rod is just a bit slower overall And your casts would be a bit easier. 2 Quote
Robert Riley Posted February 12, 2015 Posted February 12, 2015 I'd get the D734. In fact I plan on it eventually. I was actually talked down to the Champion by the man himself (Gary Dobyns). Quote
petevang04 Posted November 4, 2016 Posted November 4, 2016 How about the new Champion 736CB? anyone use this rod for spinnerbaits? I'm currently using it for Chatterbaits and Squarebills. Any reviews or info for using it as a spinnerbait option would be nice. thanks Quote
Robert Riley Posted November 5, 2016 Posted November 5, 2016 My buddy uses the 765 glass for spinnerbaits and ratl traps. I trust his word pretty well. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted November 5, 2016 Super User Posted November 5, 2016 The 734C would be much better suited for the weight ranges you mentioned. Quote

Any reviews or info for using it as a spinnerbait option would be nice. thanks I also picked up the 736CB with the intention to throw vibrating jigs. I did quite a bit of research before I bought it and actually had Gary Dobyns give me some input. When I took it out for the first time, the conditions were not optimum for the v-jig but a large 1/2 double willow was the deal. I was really surprised with the way the 736CB handled that bait. I don't know what your taste is for spinner baits or what situations you use them. I'm really liking this composite blank. Some might be hesitant to consider a " 6" power thinking it's over kill. It's not, being it's a "crankbait power." It loads well from 3/8 to 3/4 ounce. The guys I fish with have asked more about this model than any other. If you absolutely don't like a composite blank this is not the rod for you, albeit you already have one. Quote

Carterjig68 Posted November 7, 2016 Posted November 7, 2016 I have used both. I had the 734 originally and it handled baits 3/8+ well but i ended up liking the extra flex of the 733. I'm now moving on to the dx 703 as it has the length i like for close quarters, but the 3 power seems the most versatile. Quote
