Super User iabass8 Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 Anybody use this reel? The price for it is incredible for what it offers. How is the drag? I've read mixed reviews and a carbontex upgrade was the consensus. I'd like to use this reel in cover. Not slop but wood/brush/trees /w lock down drag. Can this reel handle 16-20# fluoro well and still achieve the benefits of its spool going /w the larger line? I've read nothing but amazing this about the SV spool. does it palm well on an NRX? probably be used on an 893 or 894. I can't find much about the frame size but what I gather is it is close to a 50 size shimano? Quote
IAY Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Cannot comment on comparison between 50 sized shimano nor how it fits on NRX, but I have this on my MB F4-68X7 and interchange the rod between SS SV and Metanium 13 HG. It balances very well with that rod, so I imagine it will be fine on the NRX. I also like how it palms as much as the Metanium for what it is worth. Only line I used on this line is 10lb fluoro, but I imagine it would be fine handling the heavier line( only going to get 91 yards with .330mm fluoro though). 1 Quote
Super User Raul Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 Ask Ghoti, he just got one. I got one but it's still in the box. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I've got one and it's very nice. Would suit you well for your application. The stock drag isn't super powerful, but nice and smooth. I haven't tried carbontex but doubt it would add massively to the drag pressure as the drag stack is the one washer design Daiwa use, rather than the three or four washer system in the Steez, which would probably show a bigger gain by adding carbontex. thehooligan Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I had the SS Air which is the same platform. I solely bought it for the factory ktf spool, but didnt like the reel. I think the zaion material felt cheap, and the reel was a bit bigger then what im used to using. Core 50/bfs xg. Actually anything feels big after using the bfs xg, lol. Performance wise, i thought the reel was smooth, and have only heard good things about those sv spools... Quote
bass1980 Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 How much of the reel is zion? Just side plate? Quote
IAY Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 How much of the reel is zion? Just side plate? Zaion sideplates with air metal frame(magnesium basically). Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 I have one but I haven't spent enough time with it to have an informed opinion. I like it a lot so far, and would buy more, and probably will. I will say that this is the last reel in my collection I'd load up with #20 flouro, lock down the drag and take out dumpster diving. 2 Quote
