mod479 Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Medium or med light / fast spinning rod 6'-7'. 2500 size spinning reel. Match your line for your water. I always run straight fluorocarbon, but light braid with a long leader will work too. Don't skimp on the reel. A smooth and reliable drag is your best friend if you plan on using light line. For 200 bucks I'd split the cost of the reel and rod down the middle. Not much of an Abu guy, but love my Veritas, been a good rod for the $. For the reel, check out phlueger or shim. Quote

I currently use three Saint Croix AVS63MLXF, and a AVS63MXF with Shimano CI4 reels, which is way over your budget, but before that I used an old Berkley Series One and a Daiwa SS reel for years. My son has a SC Eyecon 63MLXF, and even though it's a couple levels below the Avid, and marketed for "walleye" it fishes almost the same as the Avids, at a lot less cash. The handle is actually nicer, too. If you like a little longer rod, they are all made in 6-8 and 7-0 lengths, too. I prefer the shorter length since I'm generally just dropping the bait straight down, "in the sonor cone." 1 Quote

BPS has several rods in the $50. - $70. range that will do just nicely. Pick out something like their "Power Hump" rods in 6'6" one piece. Pick up an Abu Garcia 101 spinning reel (great drag!) for about $35.. Fill it with 6# Fireline Crystal. Add a 3' section of 6# test fluorocarbon for your leader and you're good to go. I have caught tons of smallies on this outfit. Great action, reliable performance. Bought a similar set-up for each of my grand kids too. Stick with Gamakatsu's "Drop Shot/Split Shot" hooks in size #2. Nose hook a 4" Roboworm. You will catch fish. Quote

Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 You gonna finesse drop shot or bubba drop shot? Any of the rigs mentioned previously will work for finesse drop shot fishing. If you want to bubba drop shot, and fish around gnarly cover, in and around thorn trees and deeper tree roots you might want to up your game somewhat. Currently I'm using a Kistler 7'5" Heavy action flipping/pitching stick (telescopic so that it stores easier) A Curado 50 spooled with 20 lb Abrazx completes the rig. This is more than $200. You can get a flipping stick and a small bait casting reel and 20 lb line for less than $200, just look around. You fish it just like you would a regular drop shot, except you are in and around heavier cover, hence the need for heavier line. A half ounce drop shot weight is pretty much standard for this rig, go heavier if you can find weights that work for you. Quote

I absolutely love this set up, and I've been using it for weightless plastics around light cover as well. Great bang for your buck. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 When my son was about 10 he wanted to fish father & son bass tournament so I upgraded his spinning rod & reel from a Fenwick Fish Eagle with Lew's Speed Spin to Phenix 60 SRM rod and Shimano Aero Stradic 1000 reel. The rod is rated for 1/4-5/8 oz lures/ 6-15 lb line. This outfit is now over 20 years old, won several tournaments with bass up to 9 lbs. This is his favorite outfit to this day. The outfit I recommended is very similar, except 7'1" and that is what I would get today. If you are looking for bubba drop shot use your baitcasting worm rod & reel. Tom Quote
