Blues19 Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Looking for a rod for Finesse Jigs. I have a 7'3" MH *** that I love but its a bit too stiff for throwing the 1/4 oz and 3.8 oz jigs. Would a Medium *** work? Or should I look at something else? Any suggestions? Quote
skeeter944 Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Powell 723 endurance or new max 3d, great all around 1/4-3/8 oz jig and worm rod. Little bit lighter tip than your typical m/h but plenty of backbone and balances a Lews tourny pro perfectly Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 29, 2014 Super User Posted October 29, 2014 Took me a couple seconds to realize you meant "stiff". Yes the 7'3" M *** would work. I personally like the feel of the HMG handle better. Look at the 7' MF. However, the *** is a great rod otherwise. Just be sure to pair it with an Alphas instead of one of those cheapy Shimano reels. Cgrinder Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 I'm actually having good luck throwing 1/4 and 3/8 oz jig and trailer on a 7'1" MH ***. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 30, 2014 Global Moderator Posted October 30, 2014 I use a 7' MH/XF LTB for finesse jigs and love it. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 The MH should handle those weights no problem, at least the 3/8oz, but if it feels as if the rod has too much power then drop down in length or power by going to a 7'1" MH or a 7'3" medium power. Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 OK, let's forget name brands for a moment and think about the characteristics of the rod, itself. Then, add to that data where you will be fishing and the cover and structure you will be tossing those baits. Go to a number of manufacturer's web sites and other retailers and read what they say about specific finesse rods. Do they suggest mediums or medium heavies? 7-foot or longer? Handle long or shorter? Guides micro or standard? Spinning or baitcaster? Add all this up and then look at the ***'s to find one that fits what you discover. Or, send an email to *** and ask them. You will be surprised that the *** people will actually reply to you with their suggestions. Now, what line and test should you use on what reel???????????? Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 I use the Falcon Cara Eakins Finesse Jig model. I like the rod so much I own two. Quote

This is the way to go about picking a rod for an application. Hvy / MH etc really don't mean a thing because the terms are totally subjective. The sweet spot for casting weight is usually somewhere in the middle of the lure weight range and flipping and vertical jigging is more forgiving. Lure weight ratings are arbitrary as well but a more descriptive and usually close enough. Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 Why do you think your current MH is too stiff for the 1/4 to 3/8 oz jigs? You need to be able to get a good hook set, under power rod could be a problem for you. I use 5 power (heavy) jig rods for 1/4 to 1/2 jigs without any casting issues using 10 to 14 FC line. Suggest that you practice your casting and use the rod you have. Tom 1 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 I throw 1/4, mostly 3/8 on my heavy ***, works fine. Same thing on my loomis & Croix heavys.. No issues, With casting or pitching, a medium may help overcome your issue, sounds more like a reel setup problem to me though. I use 12 to 20 pd. CXX or Yo, sometimes 15 FC. Quote
fishindad Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I use the Falcon Cara Eakins Finesse Jig model. I like the rod so much I own two. This is the rod to use! You will love it, too. Quote
The Fisher Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I use the Falcon Cara T7 Split Cast 6'10" Med Hvy. It's made for finesse jigs and it is definitely not too stiff for a 1/4 oz. Jig. Quote
ChrisWi Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I fish a 7' MH-F Mojo bass and it's perfect for lighter wired baits Quote
Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted October 30, 2014 Super User Posted October 30, 2014 I have 7'1"M/F *** and feel tip is too soft for use with 3/8 jig/ trailer + fluoro. On a few outings tried a 3/8 Keitech Spade jig with rage baby craw trailer 12# Sniper FC. Spending too much effort overcoming rod flex and line stretch every time the jig gets against a weed or in whatever cover to get it loose. Jig gets stuck give a pull rod flexes. give harder pull rod flexes line stretches. give even harder pull rod flexes line stretches more finally jig gets free. Doing this over and over was bothersome and good luck getting a good hookset at fair distance. If matched with braid that would help considerably on this rod but still get tip flex. Quote
ColdSVT Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 You guys consider 1/4 and 3/8 jigs finesse? I throw 1/8oz jigs ( with a rage craw or zoom swimmin chunk) on 14# invisx on a 7'1 MHXF croix LTB with a lews TP...thats rhe only thing i use that rod for. To ne honest i wish the rod was a hair less stiff but it works great for what i do with it so im gonna leave it be for now. I do however have a chronarch 51e cominf for that rod lol Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 If you could track down a lightly used Shimano Cumulus 6"10 MH casting rod it would be my first choice. The blank is one of the best Shimano has made and the rods are among the lightest as well. The model I am referring to fishes close to a true medium. It casts very well with a reel like a Core 50mg7 for example. I use mine for several apps including finesee jigs and hair jigs in the 1/4 to 3/8 oz range and it is perfect for it. Member "the hooligan" is also a big fan of the rod series for finesse apps and has logged quite some time with several models. They are harder to find but generally sell for under $250 and closer to $200. Not too bad for a rod that retailed for $350 and weighs around 3 ounces. Quote
bass1980 Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I dont to always sound like I'm always vouching for *** but I do have many of their rods and can give some insights. First I'd give *** a call. They have one of the best if not the best customer service. They even reply back to your emails the same or next day because I have contacted them many times. I have the 7'3 medium *** as well. I feel like the 7'3 medium is significantly stiffer than the 7'1 medium. I even have the 7'1 medium *** and it's softer too. For 1/4oz jig with trailer the 7'3 medium is great for it. At 3/8oz and trailer would still work but I wouldn't recommend anything heavier. I bought this rod for weightless wacky senko and feels like it's a bit too stiff for it so I'm moving it to my Trig and small jig setup. Hope this helps but seriously just give them a call. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 I have one of those Falcon 6'10" Eakins Jig Special jig rods. Using 12 or 14 lb fluorocarbon, I just couldn't make it work for jigs for me. Too much tip. Fast forward a few years, I got a new smaller reel ( Curado 50) and spooled it up with 10 lb abrazx. Still too much tip for jig for me, but, 3/16 and 1/4 oz jig heads and finesse worms - perfect - for me, anyway. It is my go to finesse worm rig, as long as it isn't too windy. So, if you're fishing quarter ounce jig heads with slim plastic trailers, consider using that rod. For me, quarter ounce jigs with skirts flexed the tip more than I liked, and the standard 5/16 Eakins jig flexed the tip way more than I liked. For the jig/skirt & trailer combos , I much prefer my 7'2" MH Aetos with the extra fast tip. I'll throw them on a little heavier line also, mostly 14 lb fluorocarbon. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted October 31, 2014 Super User Posted October 31, 2014 The 7'3" M Black *** is a great rod, as stated above, up to 1/4 to 3/8 on the finesse jig would be fine. Also like fishing the Falcon Bucco 7'MH for this and have had great success with the H20 brand 7'MH. Quote
