I bought my first squarebills today. I got the 1/4oz square a's in oxbow bream, baby bass, white, and Tennessee shad. I got them because they were cheap and, like I said, I've never used them before so I didnt want to make a huge investment. Any advice on fishing them ( where, when to fish them, with what, etc)?

I just bought some of those today but I've used others and I'm just starting fishing but I'll try to tell you what I learned about them here. The best place to use them is near rocks to bang them off them to get reaction bites. It works it's seems if it hits anything a log a rocks etc. They bite it if they're there. I've only been able to get bites on squarebills the last few weeks. I hope that helps a little.

Fish them anytime and bang them off any cover.

You literally want the bait coming in contact with whatever your fishing like stumps, rip-rap, laydowns, grass, etc...

You picked a good starting point, the square A is a great lure and its cheap enough you don't have to be afraid to lose em'

Here's how I believe square bills work, http://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishing-forums/topic/143817-how-squarebills-work/

Oxbow is a great color and these are really good baits to learn how to fish square bills. I like the 3/8oz size since the baits are small but you got a good size lo learn with and I say that because it will get hit by anything that swims, you'll catch big bluegills, crappie, and bass of course. Try using that in two different places, rip rap, and shallow flats, and there doesn't have to be cover to hit as long as you can hit bottom and that bait will hit bottom in less than 3' depending on the line size.  Right now is the perfect time for them, the bass are beginning to put the feedbag on so grab you square bills and hit the water!!

I usually start out fast, just blasting through rocky areas, bouncing off everything but keeping a brisk, steady retrieve.  If that doesn't get bit, I repeat the process but when I thump into something I will pause, maybe give it a little shake as though it got its bell rung and is trying to clear its vision of stars.  I always try to hit the water swimming, and twice in the past few weeks I had outings where they would smash it immediately after splashdown.  I love my lipless cranks but it's been fun adding more squarebills to the mix this fall.

My favorite squarebill. All the better if you can bang it off cover. Comes through grass fairly well.

"Square bills" have been around a long time, the first was Fred Young's Big O back in the late 60's.

I fish the kvd 1.5, bounce that thing off anything ya can. I fish alot of flats with chara or muskgrass as some call it, i get bites bouncin it of that stuff an the inbetween sand spots. Run if right off ledges, then snap the rod to try for a reaction if there sitting just below.

That is one of my favorite square bills. Not the original wood ones since I have never fished one but they are still one of the best and just catch fish. It is pretty crazy that was it so sought after you could only rent them I guess and you had to put a security deposit down or something if you "lost" it.
