First Baitcaster Today

Today i received my first baitcaster. An Okuma Citrix with matching rod. So far I'm getting the hang of it slowly. And I'm sure that with some time and practice I will love it. Right now my casting accuracy is completely gone. I couldnt hit a barn with this thing where with a spinning rod I can bullseye a target at 40 yrds. But thats not why Im posting.

I hate the knobs on this thing. They feel loose, and theres too much (for me) play in them. So Im wondering if any of you know where one can score some replacement knobs? I really like the eva knobs on my Okuma Trio spinning reel. And those seem to be adjustable, though Ive never tried nor needed to. I thought about calling Okuma to purchase knobs for a Trio and modifying the citrix for them to fit. Just thought I would check first to see if you guys know of any nice aftermarket knobs available.

Idk about just knobs but maybe you can see about getting a handle w/ knobs from okuma, you may call them and see, or if they have a IPB.. On line it may help. I'm thinking there should be a crossover handle that may suite you.

The Citrix is a nice little reel but the knobs are terrible.  I would contact Okuma and see if you can buy Helios or Komodo knobs, or possibly a whole handle assembly.   You will have to see if the knobs on your Citrix are removable or not.  If they aren't, you will need to buy a whole handle assembly.

Yeah they have a handle assembly on their site for $25.

Not sure I want to dump that money not knowing if the knobs have a tighter tolerance or not. I would be happy just removing the existing knobs and adding a washer. They arent removable though. At least not without destroying the mounting pin. This may be my winter project....

The Knobs have never bothered me on the citrix, but I also don't mind the T3 from Daiwa either and people complain about them all the time,and I never replace that stuff, I guess if you like softer knobs the Komodo and Helios have them, but call Okuma, they will usually work with you as they are trying to gain market share in the low profile baitcasting reels and rods, as well as Freshwater in general since they are usually associated with Saltwater down here in Florida.

 

I would call Okuma and see what options you have, they may have extra handles to send you from factory defective reels etc. and they may have a solution for you. The Komodo is a big step up in Money for the reel, same as the Serrano all though they have come down to $100 on Ebay if you get lucky, but the Komodo is still in the $129 range at best,although all reels are better than that price point imo.

 

The Citrix is a good first reel, I think they still have a rebate for the combo of $20 and a Jersey so I would check or ask about the rebate, I am almost certain I saw the rebates a few weeks ago for the Citrix, Helios, and Raw.

No simpler way to mess up a good reel than with bad knobs. Luckily, Lew's knobs are easy to replace. I can't stand the stock paddle knobs on those reels. I've always taken knobs off of other reels I have around the house and used them. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to call Okuma. If the knobs are not great, and not removable, it may be a call they get fairly often, so they will probably be willing to make it right somehow to keep their customers happy. Otherwise, you might have to get creative with the clip-on washers. They probably won't hurt anything.

Not sure what those E-clips are gonna do for your knobs.  If you can remove them, you can get shims (really thin, copper washers) at a RC hobby shop, and shim them up.
