Rocks. Think rocks. Like rocky points. Cast out. Let sit. Drag a little like a big fat crawfish. Let it sit. Drag a little like a big fat crawfish. Let it sit. Repeat back to you. Trailer? First select a finesse worm the color of the jig skirt and cut it into a small piece to fit on the hook' shaft by the jig's head. Then, put on the pig of your choice. The finesse worm section will stop the pig from getting twisted. Now go out and for 8 straight hours throw nothing but your big, beautiful half-ounce jig and pig and let us know how you do. Quote

Jim Moynagh reintroduced football jigs with his Roller and upgraded Rock jig. The original football jig, to the best of my knowledge, dates back to the early 60's when west coast tool maker Larry McCain came up with barrel head jigs, that morphed into being called football heads by Bill Haddock who marketed the jig with vinyl skirts. The football head was and is ideal for fishing deep rocky structured lakes we have out west. The early jig trailers were Pedigo pork rind who offered black, brown and purple color 3" and 4" lizards, actually a 3/4" wide split tail design. This is the jig I learned to bass fish with; 5/8 oz football jig with Pedigo trailers. Pedigo was bought by Uncle Josh and the lizard was changed to have front legs and doesn't work like the simple original design. I redesign the football to slide through rocks better and stand up in '71 and this jig is what I have used since. Since everyone already knows everything about football jigs, just thought I would add a little history of trivial nonsense. Tom PS, Larry McCain also came up with the mojo cylinder weight design before retiring from JPL and moved back to Arkansas where he grew up....thank you Larry! 2 Quote
primetime Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I used to use the football jig alot when I lived in Ny but here in florida they are not the greatest for weeds, but they are good around rock and great in cold water with a craw as a trailer, I used to often fish winter with nothing but a tray of jigheads, twin tail grubs, craw worms, and different weights in the Rivers upstate that had all rock for bottom. We would fish rivers when lakes were iced over and often the retrieve was so sloooow that it almost seemed a waste of time,but every time you feel a hang up or get snagged, once you pop it free, 90% of strike would occur at that moment when cold...Or as soon as it hit bottom. The Stand up is one I never got into but imagine it would be a good option, so many jig heads out there to choose from, but I learned how to catch winter Bass on the football jig and a jig is only lure I am comfortable fishing in cold water even here in Florida which is not nearly the same, but fish still shut down.
