Texas Hawg Hunter Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I typically prefer fishing on small ponds rather than massive lakes. I think they are easier to break down than a lake. Found a new neighborhood pond just the other day and caught a nice bass just before dark. Then again, I don't have a fancy bass boat with sonar etc... Who else prefers ponds? Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted October 23, 2014 Super User Posted October 23, 2014 I like fishing lakes because IMO they are more challenging when it comes to finding bass year round... Not saying I don't like pond fishing though, I love fishing ponds. 1 Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted October 23, 2014 Super User Posted October 23, 2014 preferences are: 1. tank at bass pro shop 2. lake 3. river 4. pond 2 Quote
Robert Riley Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I prefer lakes, since I have experience on small waters, and lakes are a newer experience. But ponds are much easier to breakdown like you said. It's definitely easier to fish small than large. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 23, 2014 Global Moderator Posted October 23, 2014 I enjoy fishing ponds, but I also enjoy the challenge of figuring out big lakes. The biggest bass in our state almost always are caught at farm ponds though. 2 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 23, 2014 Super User Posted October 23, 2014 I grew up fishing Lake St. Clair, as a kid we rented a rowboat and used our 7 hp Elgin. A lot of time and boats since then but now I fish in Florida, I do prefer ponds and I fish from shore. Just can't compare a larger body of water to a community pond, this kind of fishing isn't difficult. The fish are here it's just a matter of whether they are turned on or not. Quote
boostr Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 preferences are: 1. tank at bass pro shop 2. lake 3. river 4. pond They do have some Hawgs in those tanks. Quote
Super User Senko lover Posted October 23, 2014 Super User Posted October 23, 2014 Easy choice for me. Lakes. Why? I love current and plus, fishing a lake typically means you're fishing from a boat, which I don't have and I love to fish out of. I've had better luck from the few lakes I've fished compared to an average day at the ponds. That said, I'm an avid pond fisherman, I just prefer lakes. Quote
PersicoTrotaVA Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I like to fish. Pond, lake, river, mud puddle, doesn't matter to me. If there are fish in it, I will try to catch them. I like to bank fish as long as the body of water is small enough to walk around and there isn't many trees and stuff on the shore so I can fish the whole shoreline. There is nothing like throwing a backpack on with some plastics in it, carrying one rod and going "hunting". 1 Quote
Bassun Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 Personally, I think my favorite is wading creeks for smallmouth. There is nothing more peaceful than getting back in the woods and hearing nothing but the sound of water running by. Catching a big ole' bronzeback is just a huge bonus! Having said that, I tend to spend more time and focus on lakes. If I had a nice aluminum boat too, I would probably spend more time on the river since it is an awesome fishery here. Now, I'm not opposed to fishing ponds - in fact the biggest bluegill of my life (16" circa 1985) came from a farm pond - I just don't have any locally to fish. 1 Quote
lectricbassman Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I fish ponds because i dont have a boat. When i get the rare chance to fish from a boat i feel like im a better fisheman. I think that dealing with shoreline junk like trees, grass, weeds, etc. Makes makes me more aware of what im doing with my gear. When i get into a boat all that goes away and its easier for me to fish. 1 Quote
guitarglynn1 Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I wouldn't say I prefer them but pond fishing can be a lot of fun. Really makes no difference to me to be honest. If its a good spot with a good atmosphere then that is the bottom line for me. But some of my best fishing has been in small ponds so I am definitely fond of them. 1 Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted October 23, 2014 Super User Posted October 23, 2014 Depends on the lake and depends on the pond. The river here is so susceptible to high water and staining that it's completely hit or miss (mostly miss it seems). Quote

mjseverson24 Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I have not fished a "pond" in over 15 years(since I got a boat), with nearly 15000 lakes in my state I have not felt the urge to fish anything smaller... Mitch Quote
Big Jon Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 I think that if I had a boat, lakes would be preferred to ponds. I think for bank fishing, I have had better quantity with ponds. However, I have had better quality with lakes. I think the option of boat vs. no boat is the key for me. I have not fished a river, so I don't know about that. Quote

Not saying I don't like pond fishing though, I love fishing ponds. X2. I really enjoy the challenge of fishing lakes, especially deep, clear reservoirs. Pond fishing is almost too easy lol. I saw a lady who'd never fished before catch a 4 lb largemouth on a cheap spin cast combo on a small colorado farm pond. Which is a good thing, of course, ponds are a lot of fun! Quote
greentrout Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 I've fished many a farm pond in my time and will continue to do so. Truly enjoy it. But the best experience, for me, fishing on a marsh with a high tide getting ready to fall. That's an experience I would not trade. Fishing in brackish water with the aggressive LMB and other species from Reds to Specks is fun. Old school basser... Quote
hatrix Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 I like fishing whatever I have time for or feel like doing that day. They both have there moments. I do my fair share of ponds since we really don't have big inland lakes and the decent size ones are a drive. With a pond I can spur of the moment just pick up and go and make a adventure out of it. Lakes are more involved and tome consuming. I wouldn't say one is easier then another really. You can catch tons of fish out of either and it just depends on the lake/pond and day. Lake might be harder to find fish in but on the other hand you can pattern them better and you can get on schools in lakes. Ponds will have minimal structure/cover to relate to or you simply can't reach it. Lakes can be fine tuned like that. Lakes usually have a better average size but a smaller max size where a pond is opposite. I would say if I lived on a lake or it was like right around the corner I would probably almost always be fishing it. I would still be going on my pond adventures though. Trying to find new hidden places or treck through the woods trying to get places people have never been looking for that 1 big fish is something I really like. I think when people talk about pond fishing it's in a field somewhere and maybe mowed around or somewhat maintained and never fished and people say its easy. I actually fish 0 places places like that and those are in someone's yard and I don't have permission to fish there any ways. 1 Quote

Trek Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 I think ponds are great for taking kids to catch lots of fish. Plus they can run around and you don't have to worry about them falling in. Makes a fun family day. But for me I've owned my own boat for 37 years. For the first 20 it was an old junk 1958 row boat but it got me on the water. When fishing by myself or with a friend I have never fished a pond since. Nothing against it just no reason to. Quote
Dillo Posted October 26, 2014 Posted October 26, 2014 Pond for sure. The fish are so much more accessible in a pond from shore. I am only a shore fisherman, so ponds are easier to get around and find fish. At least to me, ponds tend to be less busy, too, so that's a plus. Never tried a river for bass, but that sounds cool too. I just don't like big bodies of water, too much time looking for fish, not enough catching them. 1 Quote

I know but I think people's perceptions them is different then reality if you actually add up all the ponds and not just the few you fished. There are thousands of ponds and the majority of them are actually tuff. I literally know places that have probably never been fished or if they have its been a decade and you can't hardly buy a bite. I also though fish ponds people don't that acially require some work. Like stuff that's wild back I some woods or wy buid some building in the middle of nowhere or stuff that is like a swamp or marsh type places. It's work and actually makes it more rewarding to me. Lots of them though I "KNOW" there are giants in places but they are in places you can't reach. Or I make to his little spot but can't even badly get casts off lol. I can't stress enough how much of a game changer a machete is for getting to a spot or clearing one so you can cast. Quote
