Super User aavery2 Posted November 14, 2014 Super User Posted November 14, 2014 I'd paint my nails pink if that's what it took to catch more big bass I think the easiest way to catch big bass around here would be to move somewhere else though. Great so far. Haven't caught any monsters on them but as soon as I got them poured we got slammed with this cold front. Once I get a day that the wind isn't blowing 20+ on my days off I'll venture down to one of the power plant lakes and see if I can bend them out. I did snag a very hard fighting brushpile with one and managed to lift the whole thing off the bottom and retrieve my jighead without bending it. I'm trying to get a size perspective, were the Mustad's you were using the 570's Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted November 15, 2014 Super User Posted November 15, 2014 I'm going to have to get some of those for 1 oz round ball heads for walleye fishing. I don't want Eagle Claw or Matzuo on anything I buy, there are too many "better choices". Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 15, 2014 Super User Posted November 15, 2014 570 is Eagle Claw. My mistake, I had been using the 570's in a similar mold, guess they got stuck on the brain, had lots of problems with them bending and moved to the Owner 5318 better but much more expensive, looking for a cheaper solution. Is the Mustad an 833? Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 15, 2014 Super User Posted November 15, 2014 I think its the 746?? I checked those out just now, looks like the 833 is a thicker hook, which explains a few things. Quote
Mr_Scrogg Posted November 15, 2014 Posted November 15, 2014 I worry about the neck length if it would fit the mold. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 15, 2014 Super User Posted November 15, 2014 I worry about the neck length if it would fit the mold. on the light stuff like 1/8th and 3/16th it does after that it becomes a problem Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 15, 2014 Super User Posted November 15, 2014 These are a few we have done trying to come up with a good combination. I think so far I like the spring locks the best. T to B EC 570, Mustad 833BLN, EC 570, Owner 5318, Mustad 833BLN. Quote

The problem is not finding a better hook, as you mentioned there are many better choices than EC or Matzuo. The problem for me is that many of the Do-It molds for small jig heads are designed to use the EC 570 575 hook, and finding something else to fit can be challenging. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 15, 2014 Super User Posted November 15, 2014 That's what a dremmel is for! I don't own the molds, but if they were mine, I would modify them to hold the exact hook that I wanted. Quote

Spring lock might be a little tough with the ElaZtech products that make the Ned rig so productive (strike king zeros and zman zinkerz) Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted November 20, 2014 Super User Posted November 20, 2014 Spring lock might be a little tough with the ElaZtech products that make the Ned rig so productive (strike king zeros and zman zinkerz) It's not too bad on the Zinker, but the new Zman bait the TRD is made softer and screws on like butter. They work well to keep the heads of the Kietech swimbaits from ripping so easily as well. Quote
Pete-K Posted November 26, 2014 Posted November 26, 2014 Been using Matzuo for Sauger jigs and bigger hooks for Catfish. They were always good and no issues, But the last 18 months way more issues then there worth. I have some 1/0 through 5/0 Matzuo Sickle worm hooks that are great. But there 3 years old or better and guessing not from the cheaper wire there using to make the hooks. Have a few Thousand of the Lil nasty jig hooks coming to try out. Wish they had them in bigger sizes as we use 3/0 and 4/0's for most of the Sauger jigs. Pete Quote

Finding alternative hooks that fit is a pain some times. I bought one of those steelhead collarless Do-It molds to make flick shake heads with but cannot find any hooks. All the hooks I try the eye is too tall and the stock hooks are too heavy for light line. Allen Quote
