Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 22, 2014 Global Moderator Posted October 22, 2014 Anyone ever used them? Like the sickle design, and the price for a black nickel hook is terrific. It would be great go use them for my worm nose jigs and ball heads, but don't want to buy a bunch if they're no good. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 I've never used those but I have used Matzu Sickle hooks for Walleye. They worked pretty darn good with a Berkly leach on the back. 1 Quote
Super User Munkin Posted October 22, 2014 Super User Posted October 22, 2014 Looks just like the Matzuo hook? http://www.captainhookswarehouse.com/index.cfm?page=detail&hookid=639&view=1 Allen Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 22, 2014 Super User Posted October 22, 2014 They are making them in the black platinum finish and they are good, no bad ones in the first 100 unlike Matzuo where I get at least 8 in every 100. I have yet to fish one but they are every bit as sharp as the sickle, if not sharper so I'm expecting the same performance. As for the performance of the Matzuo sickle hook, well the stick and hold, very seldom is a fish lost that is hooked with it. Worm nose and ball heads are perfect for them but they are Aberdeen type hooks and made to bend just like the sickle hooks. 1 Quote
Comfortably Numb Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 Dont know about the Eagles but Matzuo makes the worst hooks I have ever used. The snap very easily and the points are terrible. Matzuo is owned by South bend so that says alot. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 24, 2014 Super User Posted October 24, 2014 Used little #6 to #10 Matzuo hooks for salmon and steelheading for years. I don't recall breaking any, though that fishing relies a lot on drag, lots of line, and lighter, stretchy line. What I liked was that the sickle design hooked well, and kept the bait on the hook well. That hook design would be great on a wacky/flick shake jig, ball heads, even tube jigs. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted October 24, 2014 Posted October 24, 2014 I've had those Matzuo drop shot sickle hooks snap, usually at the tight bend. Not very impressed really and they don't seem to hook any better than my usual Gami worm 39 DS hooks. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 24, 2014 Super User Posted October 24, 2014 The Matzu worm hooks and drop shot hooks have been know to snap but the jig sickle hooks are different, they are Aberdeen style hooks which are made to bend out straight to free from snags and then bend back again. The small size #1 and #2 sickle hooks stick fish and the new Eagle Claw sickle bend hooks seem to be better. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 26, 2014 Author Global Moderator Posted October 26, 2014 I bought a 1000 pack of black platinum Lil Nasties. Going to pour this week and give them a try. They're very strong feeling for #1 hooks and very sharp so I'm thinking they will work well. 1 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 27, 2014 Author Global Moderator Posted October 27, 2014 They're a good looking little hook. Haven't poured any yet but here's one side by side to a poured head with a Mustad hook. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 I'm going to have to get some of those for 1 oz round ball heads for walleye fishing. Quote
starcraft1 Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Use and sell the same round bend hook and never had a problem. The sickle style i wasn't a where of. I make the red Matsuo in 3/0 for your local guide and have tried them myself, don't like them. Dull way to fast, hard to re-sharpen, quality control is? I'll be looking into E.C. for a replacement. Thanks! Quote
fats69 Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 Talked to a lot of folks that have cast them up and fished them and they're really liking them. They don't have to worry about the eyelet to bend length problems like the Mats and not getting as many messed up hooks per box. I'm getting some to try but I have lot's of hooks so it's hard to get the wife to let me buy more when I have so many now!!LOL Quote
Kickedback Posted November 6, 2014 Posted November 6, 2014 I have used the MATZUO in the smaller sizes for years for drop shot and NEVER had a failure. I know that they hook up better than any other I've used and hold on better. I bought a bunch and still use the same ones so maybe there is a quality problem now that was not there back then. I use Eagle Claw almost on everything else but some habits stay for a long time. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 6, 2014 Author Global Moderator Posted November 6, 2014 They pour great! Only caught a couple dinks on them so far though. Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted November 10, 2014 Author Global Moderator Posted November 10, 2014 Yeah, I'll turn it in to catch the smallies and largemouth I've been catching on purple and pink baits this year. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted November 12, 2014 Super User Posted November 12, 2014 I guess it is a Kansas thing I don't understand? Do you guys paint each others nails the same colors? Allen Quote

Do you guys paint each others nails the same colors? Allen I'd paint my nails pink if that's what it took to catch more big bass I think the easiest way to catch big bass around here would be to move somewhere else though. How is the hook holding up over time? Great so far. Haven't caught any monsters on them but as soon as I got them poured we got slammed with this cold front. Once I get a day that the wind isn't blowing 20+ on my days off I'll venture down to one of the power plant lakes and see if I can bend them out. I did snag a very hard fighting brushpile with one and managed to lift the whole thing off the bottom and retrieve my jighead without bending it. 1 Quote

Don't come fish the Upper Potomac then! Between pre-fishing and tournaments the past two years I have calculated it take 6.2 hours to catch a keeper (12") bass. I caught a 15" SM the last tournament and won 1st and lunker beating out the 12 1/8" that took 2nd, no other fish were caught. Allen Quote
