Rain Gear Help

Well, fishing a tourney last weekend I totally ruined my old rain pants and, I have been wanting a more quality set than the Frogg Toggs Toadz set I've been running. Now I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place, I fish more in the colder months so I have been looking at ones with liners. Here are some of my options: all of these would be with the matching bibs also unsure on parka vs jackets

If you already have a good set of summer rain wear, either would be fine. If you don't have a good lighter weight, don't buy the lined set. Get a good Gore-Tex suit and wear layers underneath. That way, you have a good set you can use all year long.

Alright, call me cheap, but I have a pair of Dickies insulated bib coveralls and I just wear my lightweight vortex rain gear over them. It works great.

The zippers on both my sets of 100mph gear I've had SUCK! I had to return the first pair when the stitching on one of the wrists started coming loose.

 

I have a pair of Guidewear also that are over 10 years old and have been worn a lot and abused. If they hadn't shrunk on me, they'd still be wearable now

I have the Pro Qualifier stuff and stay nice and dry no matter how hard it is raining.

Thanks for the input guys, I got to look at the guide wear and noticed their are a few types of them. Which ones do you guys have and can u buy a liner for it?

Buy a light one and don't worry about a liner, just get a couple nice sets of thermals and you'll be fine. I fish all winter long with my 100mph suit that is light enough to wear during the summer with shorts and a T shirt. Couple layers of thermals and some good cold weather gear and I'm good and I don't have to have 2 different sets of rain gear.

I see you are only 14. I would not spend that kind of money on a rain suit I'd outgrow in the next year or two. As other guys posted, those suits will last many years. By the time you are 16, you'll need to buy another rain gear that fits. Hold off on the expensive stuff.

I would get the Frabill series of raingear. I have the F3 set myself and I absolutely love it. I highly recommend it. If you're more on a budget, the F2 series set is only $200.

If your dead set on getting a quality rain suit look for a used set on places like the flea market on various sites like this one thats where I got my pair of 100 mph bibs in awesome shape and cheap for what they normally run.

Academy has a very nice set of rain gear that is similar to the Guidewear/100mph suit, but for a fraction of the cost. I know a couple guys that have them and love them.

Scott F has the right idea. Get yourself some Frog Togs until you stop growing. Then invest in a quality set of rain gear, or two.

Between RW and a friend of mine they convinced me to get Guidewear. Well first tourney after getting them that it rained, IT RAINED!!! Best investment I've made let me say.

A little over a week late on this topic but I figure someone will search this up later and I'd like to add my two cents.

 

I like Cabela's products. I don't know why. I even use their hard baits like "Dig-its" (shallow square bills) and "Grave Diggers" (deeper crankbaits). I like their Guidewear rain suits with the Gore-Tex. But, I would like to throw in a vote of confidence for the Tourney Trail bibs and parka. I caught the Tourney Trail suit in the Bargain Cave for half the price of what the Guidewear was on sale for. It's tough. I'm around 270lbs and I've been in the rain the last few weeks just fine and I've been kneeling and sitting on my deck with no tears, rips, or soak through and it blocked the wind last weekend when it was gusting. And I have no carpet in my boat. It's all truck bed style lining. So, if it doesn't rip on that, I'm confident it won't rip on carpet if I'm in another boat. It even comes in tall sizes which is what I like and pretty much require. Be advised the bibs are really long. I ended up with regular bibs and at 6'1½" and the legs nearly drag the ground.

 

I've been by the Cabela's and Bass Pro up near Louisville, KY and checked the Cabela's Guidewear out, the BPS 100MPH, BPS Pro Qualifier, and BPS HPR stuff out. I'm glad I bought the Tourney Trail. Feels better made than the BPS stuff to me even though it's not Gore-Tex. I think Cabela's their stuff "Dry-Plus". I also didn't like the zippers on the Guidewear. They bound up and grabbed material everytime I tried zipping the coat. Maybe the Tourney Trail won't last 15 years. I don't know. Someone check back on this thread in the year 2029 and I'll you know how they're doing.

 

Edit: As of 11/5/2014 Cabela's has the suit on sale for $99 each for jacket and bibs. They're also running some $20 gift card thing when you spend $100. So, if you're going to buy crap anyway, that'd be $200 for the suit plus $20 worth of free stuff.

Being that you're still growing I'm not sure that you really want to invest that kind of money for something that'll last you a year or two. If you do though, my vote would be for the BPS 100 MPH. The parka is a great option as it protects you more from being exposed to the elements. It stays cool enough to wear it in the summer, and warm enough in the winter and also lets you zip in a liner. I found the Columbia liner from my winter jacket zips right in so I can use it as long as fishing season lasts up here. I've been very impressed with it and I'm sure you would be as well.
