masterbass Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 The title says it all. What do you think is the most purchased rod in america? I'm guessing it's an ugly stik spinning rod. Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 My guess would probably be a Zebco 33 combo. Quote
Super User *Hootie Posted October 20, 2014 Super User Posted October 20, 2014 It is the Ugly Stik. Not sure which one. Hootie 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted October 20, 2014 Super User Posted October 20, 2014 Every type of fishing including fresh and salt water? Children's spin cast rod & reel combo. Tom Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted October 20, 2014 Super User Posted October 20, 2014 Snoopy/Micky Mouse/Disney princess type kids combos. Quote
Super User Sam Posted October 20, 2014 Super User Posted October 20, 2014 It is the Ugly Stik. Not sure which one. Hootie X2. Just read an article this summer where it stated the Ugly Stick is the most popular selling rod. As Hootie said, they did not mention if it was a baitcaster or a spinning rod. 1 Quote
ABW Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Most people won't shell out a ton of money on a fishing combo because they're just weekend warriors. Different story for us... Quote
einscodek Posted October 20, 2014 Posted October 20, 2014 Well for the bait and bucket crowd it is perfect.. Quote
Super User Maxximus Redneckus Posted October 20, 2014 Super User Posted October 20, 2014 Well for the bait and bucket crowd it is perfect..and then some i use them for everything except finesse and jigs Quote
Super User tomustang Posted October 20, 2014 Super User Posted October 20, 2014 In every fishing related store I've been in I've seen more people buying ugly stiks. And I have been in a lot of bps/cabs/academy/dicks/sports auth stores this year alone 1 Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted October 21, 2014 Super User Posted October 21, 2014 Ugly stik catfish rods, in this area. I worked part time at gander for a while, so I could get discounts. We sold probably 5-10 a week, when we were lucky to sell that many other rods combined. Quote
EmersonFish Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Depends on how specific of an answer you are looking for. Ugly Stiks sell like crazy, but they only make about 1000 different models in both spinning and casting, for fresh and saltwater applications. I know Tywithay is right about those Ugly Stik Catfish rods. Those things are everywhere. They sell a ton of the basic 5'6"(?) "ultralight" Ugly Stiks too. That's probably the rod the OP is thinking about. Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted October 21, 2014 Super User Posted October 21, 2014 Down here it's Penn reels and ugly sticks that I see most of, spinning. Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted October 21, 2014 Super User Posted October 21, 2014 I once heard that Shakespear sells more ugly sticks in 1 month than G.Loomis sells in 2 years combined. That said, we are a niche crowd, most casual anglers would never pay $100 for a fishing rod let alone $300 or more, they really don't understand. We are a very small percentage of total anglers and you can tell by going to other online fishing forums and see a lot of the same people. 2 Quote
BassThumbAddict Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 I don't mean to hijack the thread but what do you guys think is the best selling bass fishing rod? I've only been into fishing for 2 years. I would think the ducketts, berkley lighting, veritas, maybe ***? Just throwing some stuff out there. Quote
Jay Ell Gee Posted October 21, 2014 Posted October 21, 2014 Most people won't shell out a ton of money on a fishing combo because they're just weekend warriors. Different story for us... Speak for yourself! I'm only a step above a weekend warrior, I just read about way too much gear and have far too low of impulse control! Thank goodness my tackle storage systems are literally nursing at the seams now. I had to quit acquiring fishing gear! Haha. 1 Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted October 22, 2014 Super User Posted October 22, 2014 I would go with Ugly Stik if i was forced to make a guess. I remember as a kid saving up birthday money to get my first real fishing rod for $20 or so and it was a 2 piece ugly stick light action spinning rod. Caught a lot of fish on that rod... Quote

ColdSVT Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 Ugly stick for sure I used to sell 20 ugly stix before a croix, 50 before a loomis and probably 10-15 before a lughtning rod However in FL i sold a ton of uglt sticks too but i also sold a TON of all star and redbone rods. Id say the ratio was 2 ugly stix to every all star or redbone Quote
Daniel Lin Posted October 22, 2014 Posted October 22, 2014 In terms of actually buying a rod separate from a combo, from what I've seen it's the Ugly Stik and its variants (Lite, etc.). It's got that Bud Light familiarity to it, and it's supposed to be "unbreakable", good for replacing the combo rod you broke when you closed the tailgate into it on your truck last week. Gotta remember that the vast majority of bass fishermen aren't anywhere near as crazy as we BR folks can be. Personally? I've never had any regard for the Ugly Stik. Just feels wrong in my hands. Super User Ratherbfishing Posted October 23, 2014 Super User Posted October 23, 2014 I, myself, have a couple of ugly sticks. Don't use 'em ever but I have 'em. Quote

I can tell you that outside of bass fishing circles, '13' isn't particularly well known. Berkley sells a lot of Lightning Rods because you can buy them anywhere from Wally World to BPS, anywhere in the country; and they are very affordable. They are probably a distant second to the Ugly Stik, but well ahead of just about anything else. There may be some other low-end Shakespeare or Berkley combos I'm not aware of that people buy a lot of just right before a vacation. I see a lot of people in line right before a holiday weekend buying combos, and you know they are not spending much. 1 Quote
