Big Fish Small Pond Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 Is there an actual difference, other than personal preference and necessity, to the use of a 1 piece casting rod or a 2 piece casting rod? Keep in mind that top of the line fly fishing rods are 4 piece rods. Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted October 19, 2014 Super User Posted October 19, 2014 If your using quality gear then IMO there isn't a noticeable difference. If you want a two piece rod because it is more convenient for you then I would get one! 1 Quote
Super User Felix77 Posted October 19, 2014 Super User Posted October 19, 2014 IMO there is a difference but it is minor. 2 piece tend to be a bit softer in general. Get the 2 piece if preferred. Quote
Super User Raul Posted October 19, 2014 Super User Posted October 19, 2014 You will not be able to tell the difference if both rod are about the same price and quality. Quote
papajoe222 Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 There has been a major improvement in two piece casting rods over the last decade. Prior to that, I wouldn't recommend one. Look for a quality brand that offers both. The so called dead spot where the two pieces join on a casting rod should be somewhere between the first and second guide (from the handle). In that position, it won't effect sensitivity or the loss of any power enough for most anglers to notice. Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted October 19, 2014 Super User Posted October 19, 2014 These aren't your grandfather's 2 piece rods anymore. there is much technology in the ferrules that make them perform as well as 1 piece rods. IMO there is a difference but it is minor. 2 piece tend to be a bit softer in general. Get the 2 piece if preferred. I found just the opposite when comparing the St. Croix 3s76mlxf and the 3s76mlxf-2. I built the 1 piece for myself and the 2 piece for a friend. The 2 piece had a touch more power, which I really liked. I'm gonna sell the 1 piece and build myself the 2 piece when I find the time. Quote
OntarioFishingGuy Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 I prefer 2 piece rods for overall portability. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 As long as you stay with the same level of quality multi piece rods are every bit as good as their one piece counterparts. Scott is right about two piece having a touch more power. My guess is from the double wall where the ferrules are. Quote
