MNfishguy Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 I'd like to get a fish finder that would be easily portable from one boat to another. Any suggestions? Advice from real people is better than advice from a salesman anyday. Quote
Super User slonezp Posted October 18, 2014 Super User Posted October 18, 2014 When you say portable, are you looking for 100% portable, or a head unit which is portable, but the power and transducers would be permanently mounted to each boat. You can make any unit portable. WayneP has a pic of a 100% portable side imaging unit. What kind of money are you looking to spend? Quote
ClackerBuzz Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 yup my 598 side imaging unit is 'portable'. i switch back and forth between my jon boat and canoe. and a friends jon boat. i sawed up an old ski pole and mounted the ducer to one end and a clamp to the other (the ski pole is skinny and has very little water resistance as opposed to a 2x2" piece of wood; and won't rust). it's powered by a 12v battery. i tuck the head unit, mount, battery and cords into a beer cooler. some guys get the reverse lid coolers and screw the mount to the inside...and just flip the top over and slide the head unit on. leave the battery in the cooler and drill a few holes to run the wires in. gramps50 Posted October 19, 2014 Posted October 19, 2014 I just bought a SonarPhone which is a bobber looking deal that you can cast or even tow behind a boat. It then send a wifi signal to your phone and using their app the sonar graph shows on your phone. I use it when going to small lakes or ponds where I'm fishing from the bank. Also gives you depth and water temp. Quote

jcoholich Posted October 23, 2014 Posted October 23, 2014 With the SonarPhone you can also turn it into a chart plotter by downloading the navionics boating app. This will allow you to use the navionics app as a chart with using your phone gps for location and the vexilar sonarphone for fish finding and depth.
