Just got a used tdz103h for $150. Considered holding off and spending 100 for a tatula 100h. Looks in pretty good condition and has upgraded drag. I've never seen or used one before. Good purchase?

It's a little on the high side of a fair price range.  If it's smooth and working, it's every bit as good as MUCH more expensive reels purchased brand new.  I'd call it a good pickup.

Well, it honestly depends up to the condition of the Z, but you can usually get a decent Type R one for around that price.

Edit* A bit of a warning about TD-Z and the variants. The paint comes off pretty easily from boat rash etc, so if you are like me, who likes to keep everything in the nicest shape possible, keep it in a reel cover when you aren't using it.

Type rs on ebay are doing 200+

Not many tdz to choose from, especially right handed. None on Craigslist either.

I keep my tatulas in reel covers...tdz will certainly be going in one. Handle knobs are a bit worn but was planning on putting reel grips on if not swapping out handle completely.

The Tatula compared to the TDZ is like comparing a VW Beetle to a Rolls Royce being the Rolls Royce the TDZ, the TDZ has only one flaw, the drag pads which can be easily upgraded with Carbontex drag pads, also since the TDZ was manufactured in several versions and some of it´s components are compatible with more modern day reels you can take advantage of those components of today, you want the reel to be more finesse ? no problem ! the cheaper version is to get a 105 spool, want more and better finesse ? no problem ! SV shallow spool; original spool a little bit shallow for thicker line ? no problem ! Steez stock spool or SV deep spool.

You made the purchase of one of the finest reels ever made for a fair price.

I got 4 TDZs, 2 105, 2 103.

Hmm, I remember seeing them for around 150 when I was looking for my first Daiwa reel, but I ended up getting a SS SV. You definitely have to shop around, but I think its a fine price for a clean TD-Z. I am sure you will enjoy it!

That's because it's over a decade since they made them.

Oh, I'm aware. Still looks like a modern reel. I'm very excited to try it out and upgrade it.

Lots and lots of good stuff out there for them. It's a fun platform to work on. From back when crank side plate screwed into the yoke posts.

The tdz variants are my favorite platform.  I have 4 (2 r+, 105, 103).  These reels in decent used condition are imo the best deal out there for the money.  If I have a choice between $150 for one of these or a brand new $150 modern reel, I will take a tdz.  My favorite are the r+ with 7.1 gear swap.  Light, smooth and casts like a dream not to mention all of the upgrade options available.  You made a great choice.
