Guest whittler Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 "Poor Mans Pointer" There is an alternative to $15 jerk baits that will require about $2 for the bait and another $5 for enough materials for several more. Been playing with these for a couple years and have managed to make a well balanced suspending jerk bait for very little cash and the expenditure of about 15 minutes time. If you have a the hand skills to scratch your elbow without poking your eye out then you can do this. Materials 1 Renegade Minnow $1.97 (wallmart) 7 BBs 1 1/4" dowel Super glue or 5min epoxy 1 3/16" drill bit paint or fingernail polish (your choice on color) Most of the pictures and steps are self explanatory. Cutaway view, showing inside and the plastic they use for rattles. Once the holes are drilled the rattles are removed. Drill the 3/16" holes in these locations, rattles can be shaken out at this time. In the rear hole drop in 3 BBs, tip the bait slightly forward and the BBs with centered on the bottom, drip in a couple drops of epoxy and glue the rear BBs in place against the hook hanger support, all in line. Once the glue has set in the rear drop 4BBs in the front, do not glue them, just let them float. The pencil sharpener is used to bevel the dowell slightly. a drop of super glue or epoxy and push it into the holes, once set cut off close to the body. Shows dowell glued in place before cutting off, once cut use sand paper to shape level with the top of the bait. A coat of paint or fingernail polish on the back to cover and seal the plugs and your ready to test. A little red trim on the gills and your done. Quote
Super User Jimzee Posted March 17, 2007 Super User Posted March 17, 2007 This is one of the best things about this site, people take time to share a little info like this to help everyone out. Thank You and well done!! :) Blaine, Quote
Guest whittler Posted March 17, 2007 Posted March 17, 2007 Thanks for your kind comments guys. Some of the less expensive baits can be altered to bring their performance on par with about anything. I cut a lot of baits apart see their internal structure, have a box full, if you want to know how some are made you have to look inside. Like this picture for instance, to those who think Bagleys are through wired, have a look. This bait was badly damaged when I cut it apart but you can check for through wire construction with an ohmmeter. Quote
ominousone Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 I can't tell from the pics, are there two chambers in that bait? Is that why you put two holes in it? One for the front bb's and one for the back? I guess I'm trying to figure out, do the bb's move across the entire bait or just the front. Also I wouldn't make such a nice bait w/o replacing trebles w/ some gammies. Maybe even tricking it out w/some feathered trebles like a x-rap has. Quote
Guest whittler Posted March 19, 2007 Posted March 19, 2007 Look close at pic 4 and you will see that there is one chamber in the bait but not enough space above the hook hanger to allow the bbs to get through. Quote
ominousone Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 can't wait to try this out. I think I understand now. So it's two holes cause the bb's can't go back and forth. The bb's in the front can klink together to make sound and the back ones are to help level the bait... Wally world here I come. Quote
Guest whittler Posted March 20, 2007 Posted March 20, 2007 omniousone, your dead on. You might want to assemble everything and just tape over the holes until you "sink test" it. The bait should just slowly rise with the way its weighted, but now is the time to make any adjustments to trim exactly the way you want it. Quote
rosewalt Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Just plain great info As it pertains to the Bagley what do u mean when u refer to through wired ? Quote
skillet Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Whittler, Really great info on that post ! I've one question and may be about to answer it. Did you use 3/16 hole to get the glue in there? Was sitting here thinking about it and I guess the BBs are an 1/8 :-[. Guess I'll shut up and just say great info As Ever, Skillet Quote
Guest whittler Posted March 23, 2007 Posted March 23, 2007 Skillet. a bb is about .170 so it needs a little larger hole but it does also help with getting the glue in. Rosewalt, when a bait is through wired there is one continuous peice of wire from one end of the bait to the other, all the hookhangers and line tie are made from a single piece of wire. Quote
bmadd Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Hey Whittler...i tried your little project out and it was pretty easy to do. good detailed directions. my only problem now is whats the best way to fish one of these lures. im more of a soft plastic fisherman so i don't have much experience with these. Guest whittler Posted March 28, 2007 Posted March 28, 2007 Most jerkbaits are fished in a series of jerks and pauses, the colder the water usually the longer the pause between jerks. Do a search here for X-Raps, LC pointers or Rouges and you should find more information than you can read in a week. Quote
basspro48 Posted April 4, 2007 Posted April 4, 2007 Wow man great info, I am going to have to try this Quote
ominousone Posted April 5, 2007 Posted April 5, 2007 I made about 10 of them so far and they have come out great. I bought gamakatsu trebles for them and have already replaced the front ones. I am going to be tying feathers and crystal flash onto the rear trebles and will have a really nice bait w/top notch components for about $3.50 total per bait. That's cheaper than x-raps, and they will have gammy trebles instead of vmc's and I will have a hand in catching my fish. Very cool whittler, thanks again. I wish I had a digi camera I'd post pics.
