FunkJishing Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 who can explain the diffrence in a casting rod, crankbait/jerkbait rod, jigging rod, flipping & pitching stick? in regourds to length, speed and action. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted October 15, 2014 Super User Posted October 15, 2014 There are several how to articles on these techniques at the top. Most all will give you a preferred rod power and action (as a minimum) in the author's opinion. Quote
Super User Solution smalljaw67 Posted October 15, 2014 Super User Solution Posted October 15, 2014 Cranking rods have a moderate action meaning they have a deep or parabolic bend or flex to keep pressure on a fish hooked with trebles without it pulling the hooks free. They can be any length and power but most you see range from 6'6" to 7'11" and in medium, and medium heavy powers and while there are medium light and heavy powers I'm giving you the most popular. A jerkbait rod is like a topwater rod, there are some that like shorter rods with fast actions in a medium power while others like a longer length with a moderate action, lengths go from 6' to 7' in medium to medium heavy powers. Jig and worm rods are normally 6'6" to 7'3" and are mostly medium heavy but can be medium also and they are mostly fast or extra fast in action. Pitching sticks can be as short as 6'6" but most are 7' to 7'6" and feature a fast or extra fast action in medium heavy to heavy powers, and flipping sticks are generally 7'6" to 8' and are heavy power to extra extra heavy power and can be fast to moderate fast to moderate in action. 3 Quote

Ozark_Basser Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Just to note, you don't HAVE to go by those certain rod characteristics to get what you want out of what you're fishing. I personally can throw every technique I want on a 7 foot MH St. Croix premier except for a handful of techniques. A lot of guys like ex-fast rods for jigs and what not, but I'm kind of the opposite. I like the rod to have a little more bend for fishing jigs and every other technique for that matter. If you like a rod with a little more bend that covers almost all of your bases, then the St. Croix premier line is a good place to start. 1 Quote
FunkJishing Posted October 16, 2014 Author Posted October 16, 2014 great, cool i just wanted to know the characteristics. I do understand that they vary from person to person due to prefrence. Knowing just helps me better select rods for particular uses. Quote
