TBO Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 Im going back out today around four to the pond i skunked at just the other day. ( post titled: skunked) This pond is about 1 FoW for about 20-30 yards from shore. In the center it drops to about 30 FoW this pond looks exactly like a soup bowl with the wide lip and bowl in the center the water is clear for up to 10ft. Their is no structure anywhere on this pond http://www.mass.gov/eea/docs/dfg/dfw/habitat/maps-ponds/dfwmarys.pdf How would you fish it? What would you use ? What colors should i use? Can i use same colors when it gets dark? Thanks for all the advice srry i post so much Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted October 15, 2014 Super User Posted October 15, 2014 Looking at your map, you have structure, you just don't have cover. Look at the depth contours and fish the pockets that make points underwater. Since I have never fished there, with your limited info, I'd drag and swim a biffe head or some kind of football swinghead jig with a biffle bug in either a green pumpkin or bama craw to start, also fish a fat Ika, and possibly a dropshot or weightless senko. But def would start with the biffle bug and swing jig head and drag and swim that thing around those underwater points and deeper pockets. Quote
Super User deep Posted October 15, 2014 Super User Posted October 15, 2014 Nvm, for some reason I thought you were fishing from the bank. Quote
TBO Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 Sry. What other info could you use? I dont have electronics to pin point the bottom Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted October 15, 2014 Super User Posted October 15, 2014 You have a map that shows area where they are generally located. That is where I would fan cast and work. You have a fishing rod and a crankbait will do wonders as well as a jig to let you know what's down there. If I could get a map like that of the ponds I fish in S. Cal I would probably be able to zero in on the fish A LOT quicker since I know the depth contours of where they should be at certain times and fish those higher percentage areas more thoroughly and eliminate less productive waters. HardcoreBassin Posted October 15, 2014 Posted October 15, 2014 I would target the shore closest to Mary Pond Road. Also the deeper pock on the northeast side as well as the pocket on the southeast side. Target those drops and you should do well. Not sure what the bite has been like where you are, but try a few different presentations. Jig would be a nice search bait to see what you have on the bottom. Maybe a crank? Good luck! 1 Quote
PersicoTrotaVA Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I would go around to the north side and cover the whole east side keying in on those spots where the contour lines get close together. That means sharp drop ledges with access to deep water and shallow water. There should be lots of spots there with fish. I would use something natural looking, like a sexy shad crankbait or a sexy shad double willow spinnerbait. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 If the waters that clear and assuming you know something about the baitfish in the pond, I would throw swimbaits mimicking the baitfish as a good place to start. I would also try some reaction baits. Working them fast with erratic action is a good idea in clear water. This works a lot better for me. Another option I like in super clear ponds is to take the skirt off of a buzzbait and stick a paddle tail on there. This slays them in ponds for me. Also after looking over your map, I'd say those two "mini ditches" that make a teardrop sort of shape in your map are the most predictable places to hold some bass as far as structure goes. 1 Quote
primetime Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I would chuck a bluegill colored rattle trap at various depths and speeds to eliminate water, and also use a dropshot or c-rig with a 7.5" ribbon tail or look for craws and if you have them, I would go with a jig near bottom bounced or slow rolled....Don't rule out topwater either, I fish a pond that is a 20' fish bowl and often a loud topwater is what they want. *Hank Posted October 18, 2014 Posted October 18, 2014 This may not help now but I would throw a realistic colored deep diving crankbait as a search bait and when you find the fish throw a dropshot rig! Quote
