*Hank Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 What is the average size range of the fish you catch most often? For instance, the majority of the fish I catch, are roughly between 14"-17" (maybe 2-3lbs) What about yours? X2. wish it was more like 4lbs. Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted November 29, 2014 Super User Posted November 29, 2014 Most of the time I go out these days I'm taking someone most interested in just catching fish (numbers). Median and mode would definitely be around 12", mean would be pulled up by the couple 3+ pounders we'll usually run into. Quote
Ozark_Basser Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I catch a lot of 1-2 pounders. The weird thing is that I catch as many 3 lb + bass as I do < 1 lb fish. I don't even own a spinning rod or a rod powered lower than MH Quote
IntroC Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 Fisherman are known to overexagerate. I think there may be a little of that going on in this thread. 2 Quote
pbizzle Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 I think we beat this topic to death every 2 weeks , search for the previous 900 conversations about this. While that may be true, it's still fun topic to talk about it. If you don't want to talk about it, don't join in. And to answer this question, my average fish is about 2.5. Unless I'm jig fishing then my average fish is about 4lbs. I've actually only caught one dink on a jig this year. Quote
boostr Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I like catching my 2 and 2 1/2s then throw in a Pig ones in a while please for Pete's sake... Keeps the fishing interesting for me. Quote
boostr Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 Plus idon't mind catching the erand pickeral or pike. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted November 30, 2014 Super User Posted November 30, 2014 My average is a little bigger than the first one and some what smaller than the second. A-Jay 3 Quote
EvanT123 Posted November 30, 2014 Posted November 30, 2014 I'd say my average is 10-14 inches. Don't have a scale yet but would say the fish are around 1-2 pounds. Funny thing I noticed this year. Big fish 15+ are difficult to land in the boat. Once they see it they bug out. The small one minus 12 are more difficult to land on the bank. There flipping and flapping everywhere; and vise versa. I'm talking smallmouth. Quote
seancombs Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 I fish the Manasquan Reservoir a lot. Like WRB said above, You can spend all day catching 1 pound fish using just about any bait on the market, but if you're using the right bait and color 3 pounders are all over the place. Target big fish. Quote
SRQbass Posted December 6, 2014 Posted December 6, 2014 Differs for me. I'd say last year my average was in the 3 pound range, but this year, despite some good sizes, it's been lower, on average. I'd put this season's average in the 2 pound range. Though it's hard to quantify since I don't keep record of every bass I catch. Same with me! I've caught some big bass this season, but i've gone through countless -1 pound bass to get to them Quote
kingmotorboat Posted December 8, 2014 Posted December 8, 2014 Totally depends on body of water! 42 years of tournament fishing Toledo Bend my average is a 5 bass limit of 20-25 lbs with a kicker of 7-9 lbs. Lacassine Wildlife Refuge; average catch is 1-1 1/2 lbs with 3-4 being a hawg, 5-8 are gaints. This marsh does produce a couple dozen DDs annually which keeps me coming bach. I've a friend who built a 100+ acre pond, stocked it with 100% Florida Strain, crawfish, & bream. Our average is 2 1/2-3 lbs & the pond is only 2 years old. I can't wait til lacassine opens up. And where is said pond at lol Quote
Fish'N Impossible Posted December 15, 2014 Posted December 15, 2014 Where I am I on the decent lakes our average fish is starting to push the 2lb mark. Over the past 10 years the ODNR (Ohio Department of Natural Resources) has done an amazing job increaseing the health of our fisherys. 10 years ago the average bass was .75 to 1lb you would win tournaments with a 6lb bag consistently. In todays tournament conditions it takes 12-16lbs to win, 17-19lbs in early spring. 1 Quote
Fish Murderer 71 Posted December 18, 2014 Posted December 18, 2014 I usually find I'm catching most of my fish in the 15 to 18 inch size. I'll catch some that can be 15" that weigh 4lbs and a 22" that weigh s the same... so far this year I'm stuck with a 7+ lbs for the biggest. Quote

WOW - I would love to see some photos of 15" bass that weigh 4 pounds - I bet they must look like basketballs! Fish tend to run thin in the water I fish but after weighing 211 bass 15" in length the average weight is only 1.48 pounds.... Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 18, 2014 Global Moderator Posted December 18, 2014 WOW - I would love to see some photos of 15" bass that weigh 4 pounds - I bet they must look like basketballs! I caught one that was 3.25 at 15", and that was crazy, about to bust at the seems fat. Another 3/4 of a pound would just be insane. Quote
Thornback Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I usually weigh every bass I catch. I'm curious and I also like to hit the weight accurately through experience. I find the fishermen who don't weigh are usually off by one to two pounds. My last trip (yesterday) the largest bass caught by a buddy was 2.12. I lipped it into the boat and as I held it I guessed it to go 3.8. Boy was I fooled when I put her on the scale. Here's a photo of my buddy holding her. Take a look at the photo and you'll see what I mean . . . 1 Quote
joelhains Posted December 20, 2014 Posted December 20, 2014 I haven't weighed a fish in years. The tourneys I fish are catch Photo and release so we use a measuring board to determine length. The lake I fish most has a ton of 14-15 inch fish. It seems that 90%if the fish hit this length then stop growing. But there is a that small percentage of fish that hit the 20 inch mark. It is also somewhat rare for me to catch one that is much less than 12 inches. 14-15 inches seems to be the norm. I also fish rivers a lot. More so than lake actually. This season has been a strange one for the rivers I fish. but my "average" fish was larger than most preivious years. I didn't catch nearly as many fish as I normally would on a given day but I caught far fewer small (10 inch) smallies. 1 Quote
Super User bigbill Posted December 21, 2014 Super User Posted December 21, 2014 From 1 1/2 to 6lbs on average in the evenings. More 2- 6 1/2lb+ I scored one (1) 10lber early in the am/dark. There's more numbers of bass in the evenings. There's less in the dark to early am but there bigger and closer to shore. But being stealthy is the key they spook really easy. Give me 10 dinks everyday to catch I'd be happy. Using lures only from shore I was up to 6-9 bass per outing. From shore that's not too bad for one to two+ hours of fishing due to my disability my time is limited. I tell the fish to hurry up. Lol Quote
cyclops2 Posted December 21, 2014 Posted December 21, 2014 worst year ever at the beginning of the Saint Lawrence River. I, we caught 2 big smalls on a trip in a excellent area past years.. Had to go 15 miles into Lake Ontario for schools of bass. V H S disease is wiping out miles of river fish. Can not blame the pro guys for dumping right near weigh in. All the types are almost gone in places. Even the Gobies are going. So are almost all the cormorants & herons. Bad times. been going down hill for years. Quote
bassindon Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 1.5 to 2.5 pounds are the most prevalent as I do a lot of pond fishing when not in tournaments or fishing the bigger bodies of water for fun. Tournament coming up next month on the Historic James River and the bass average around 1.5 to 2.0 pounds with some big ones mixed in. I love the TV shows where the guy will pull a 1.5 pounder out of the water and declare it is a 3 pounder without weighing it. Catching the big ones if fun but one does not catch them on a regular basis. I put them all on scale/scales and even after it's been on two scales, on video, I get a comment like " IF that is a 12 lb fish" LOL! So even on a scale or two is not enough for some lol I catch nice fish regular enough to be happy. I think the fact here is MOST don't target them enough to ever know how regular or not it can be ; ) Good luck! 2 Quote
hawgenvy Posted December 22, 2014 Posted December 22, 2014 I think when guys are bassing they go into denial about the dinks. Sometimes, after I unhook a 2 ounce "largemouth," I find myself looking the other way as I toss it back, as if it didn't count. Yesterday, after visiting my friends' house for lunch, I strolled around the lake behind their home armed with a weightless Senko, and in 10 minutes landed a fat 4 pounder. That was pretty good, right? I hope nobody saw the four tiny dinks I also caught. Because otherwise my average would be 15 oz. Knowing myself all too well, I'm prone to take people's professed averages with a grain of salt. Quote
