1.5 to 2.5 pounds are the most prevalent as I do a lot of pond fishing when not in tournaments or fishing the bigger bodies of water for fun.

Tournament coming up next month on the Historic James River and the bass average around 1.5 to 2.0 pounds with some big ones mixed in.

I love the TV shows where the guy will pull a 1.5 pounder out of the water and declare it is a 3 pounder without weighing it.

Catching the big ones if fun but one does not catch them on a regular basis.

Do you think it's possible that most of the posters here do it too?

They always shrink on the scale  :eyebrows:

I think for the most part guys on here are pretty good at judging fish weight, but there are some obvious exceptions at times. If I didn't weigh a fish, I typically won't guess a weight, but it should be easy to tell the difference between a 1.5lb fish and a 3lb fish with a little experience.

If I would have to guess I would say 1-1.5 with a few 2-3lb here and there, but most of the time its between 1 and 1.5.

Ah....a 3-4 pound average would be nice. In fact, my "lunker" is right in that range. I've only been fishing seriously for a year.

Actually, my average is more like 1/2 a pound because the pond right by my house has a lack of big fish. It has a lot of fish, but they rarely exeed 2 pounds.

On my other pond, my average would be more like 1 1/2 pounds.

The largest I caught this year was probably 2lbs.

The lake I concentrated on seems to have a LOT of 3 year old (or so) bass willing to hit lures.

This is from the bank. Repairing the boat is taking more time than I figured, but I would like to get out next year and troll that lake. I am sure there must be bigger bass in there.

That said, I'm starting to wonder if this lake is deep enough to have any real thermocline. Thinking back, I don't recall the sonar ever sounding that deep, but it has been years. But I digress.

I am saying 2lbs max this year, maybe 3/4lb average.

I agree about the seasonal thing. I can say that since the weather has cooled off, I have caught a lot more. Mostly because I bank fish and they are getting back up into the shallows. I have caught a couple dozen largemouth in the last two weeks (about 30 minutes to an hour of fishing a day). Though there were a few in the 3 pound range, I would say I am around 1.5-1.75 pounds on average, 13"-15".

If you look at the bass population in any lake, small bass out number big bass, the "average " size in most lakes being 13" or around 1 3/4 lbs. I avoid juvenile size bass and spend my time targeting larger adult size bass. I like to catch numbers of bass.....big bass. When the smaller bass are active, I usually move looking for larger bass. I have days catching nothing and days catching several big bass, a few days each year catching giant bass. On average the average size is around 22" or 6-7 lbs, that is the size my lake has a good population of right now. If you add up all the bass caught, divide by the number of days and nights fished, including zero's, the average would drop way down!

I am with Tom. Most days that I fish for LMB I am targeting big bass. If I averaged those bass on those days only my average would be very high, like 6-8 pounds. However occasionaly I will go to a pond or a lake know for smaller bass and I will just enjoy catching a lot of smaller fish. So if I averaged all of my days those small fish days would kill my average. I would probably end up around 3 - 4 pounds.

These 12" bass I talk about catching eat anything from ultralight lures to bigger, 1oz lures. They are aggressive!

It's interesting.

I have one pole that will throw over 1oz. If I go to bigger lures I'll have to invest in heavy poles.

I am hoping the big bass in this lake are hiding deep. I'd sure like to get maps of the lake before they dammed the creek to make it, too!

10" to 12" would be my average :(. So any time I get over 1 lb I get excited, and anything over 2 ia just icing on the cake....... I have low low standards.

Totally depends on body of water!

42 years of tournament fishing Toledo Bend my average is a 5 bass limit of 20-25 lbs with a kicker of 7-9 lbs.

Lacassine Wildlife Refuge; average catch is 1-1 1/2 lbs with 3-4 being a hawg, 5-8 are gaints. This marsh does produce a couple dozen DDs annually which keeps me coming bach.

I've a friend who built a 100+ acre pond, stocked it with 100% Florida Strain, crawfish, & bream. Our average is 2 1/2-3 lbs & the pond is only 2 years old.

Im like other guys going big. Pre Swimbaits around 2 lbs on any given lake. Post Swimbaits  around 7+ maybe 8 lbs , also on any given lake.  Just depends on what you target  ;) Good luck!

My numbers have been down the last couple of years, mainly because I've been concentrating more on quality fish than numbers.  For me, that's 16" or longer. I've also stopped keeping a log, but I do know that I only topped the 20"/5lb. mark four times this year, so I'm guessing my average has been about 3-3.5lb.

What is the average size range of the fish you catch most often?

For instance, the majority of the fish I catch, are roughly between 14"-17" (maybe 2-3lbs)

What about yours?

Southern Illinois (public waters) 1.5~ 2 lb.

and to answer the question.  at my lake i caught four fish under 3lbs the entire summer and fall with about 145 days on the water.  my average fish is 3.2lbs exactly.  the last 4 fish i caught were 7.2, 5-2 (both from that boat launching dock) and , 3-8, 3-6 (all on 8lb flurocarbon).  Now i'm not catching more than 5 fish a day, many times i only catch 1 , but when i do its always always over 3 lbs. I watched a kid catch a 4-6, a 6-11 and a 3-5 one afternoon a month ago from the shore.  that's what lake casitas is known for.  When i lived back east and fished the potomac river and ponds in northern virginia , my everage was 1.2 lbs.     Now if you don't have a reliable scale , then you shouldn't be saying anything about how much your fish weighs.

I think my average here in MN would be in the 3 lb range. Love hooking into them 5-6 pounders!

2010 to 2013 seasons, a total of 5222 bass caught, the AVERAGE fish was 11.50038299502106 inches...

The 2014 season data is incomplete but it might not make that 11.5" average...

Reminds me that i need to keep a fishing log of all of my catches next year so I can figure out my average bass, my best baits and spots as well. You guys that do keep logs, how do you keep them?

Depends on where and how I'm fishing.  My home lake "Lowery", 50 dinks a weekend with a 5 or 8 added in just fun fishing.

If I fish Toho or Kissimmee in a tournament, then 8 - 10 fish but the weights are normally way up because of the lake and bait choice.

If I fish a 2.5 acre lake I built and stocked 4 years ago then every other fish is over 4 lbs and up to 9 lbs.

It is completely dependent on LOCATION.
